Why is my Marantz receiver auto-updating itself against my will?

So, I'm sitting here working on a computer in the same room as the receiver (SR6013), which is playing some jazz behind me, and it suddenly turns off at 1:20 am local time (a few minutes ago)...

Surprised, I turn around and check it. The unit's display says it's downloading an update!

I had checked my settings after seeing that we were potentially losing features with firmware updates, and so my setting for Auto-Update is OFF. Yet the receiver downloaded and applied an update. According to the unit, I am now running 3600-8280-1232-2065 and DTS Version 3.90.50.54 (I confirmed It has clearly already applied whatever update it received, it because it rebooted itself, and now when I run "check for update," it shows that it is supposedly up to date.)

While Auto-Update is off, "Allow Update" (some sort of master setting, as other settings disappear if you disable it) is set to "On." Since I had Auto-Update off and Upgrade Notification on, I presumed I would be notified about updates and ASKED if I wanted them.

I will turn off Allow Update. Not happy. Especially without knowing what was updated and what I either gained or lost.

Curious if others have had similar experiences. In a way I want them to update for real bugs and for security updates, but I don't want to lose features.

If 'Allow Update' was turned on, it's not the fault of Marantz, it's up to the person who set it up to leave it on or turn it off. If you paid someone to set it up, they should have asked if you wanted it on or off.

If you want to know what the update entailed, you could call their tech support line but I can't promise they have the info- it's usually for the engineering team. However, they should know if any features were affected.

IMO, updates are often provided for improving the stability of an AVR and there's no risk unless you have frequent power failures. Some manufacturers offer possibility of updating via USP drives and that could be convenient. I've always allowed the important updates and skipped on some suggested optional ones on my equipment, and that includes blu-ray players.

If "Allow Update" is the only REAL setting that controls everything, the other sub-settings shouldn't be there.

In the menu, it might have an Options button, which should have Maintenance Mode as one of its options. Scroll down through the list and look for Updates and Update Notification. You have two choices- On or Off.

Made me look at my Denon as I generally turn off updates until I need them....I just have under General - Notifications a update on/off and an upgrade on/off. Then again right now I don't even have it hooked up to the internet.
