Recommended AVR for setup

Hello, I have been working on putting together a system and looking for some advice on an AVR to get. I play most of my media from a PS4 and will be getting a PS5 when launched, so I’m assuming HDMI 2.1 will be needed tho they haven’t given specs yet. I sit roughly 9 ft from the TV area, and my room is 17.5ft by 16ft with a cutout on one wall 3ft by 11ft. I’m split about 60% movies/ shows and 40% music. I would say on average I listen about 70db. Gear so far is B&w 603 for L/R and center is B&w HTM 6 just ordered a SB-3000 and will probably order a second one in a few weeks. My only planned future upgrade so far will be a couple surrounds since I won’t be staying in my current location after a couple more years for school. Any advice is much appreciated! Thank You

The B&W 603's aren't hard speakers to Drive. But they do like Power. I'd look for a solid Receiver from Denon or Marantz w/ the Connectivity you need.
AVR-X3600H
You could always add an external Amp too to Drive them

The 603s are not that easy to drive. Their impedance dips down to 3 ohms around 65 Hz which would have the X3600H struggle if the OP listened to his system at high SPL. But since he will be using subs with his system, he shouldn't have any problem. However, I suggest that he sets the LFE crossover frequency at 90-100 Hz to relieve the AVR from some of the low frequency content.

would jumping to the 4700h relieve that stress? Or would it be more cost effective to look towards external power to help drive those mains? I was also looking at the 3700h as it adds HDMI 2.1 support. I would say at most I will be running a 5.2 setup for the time being as Atmos won’t be available to me until I move in a couple years.

I would suggest the Denon AVR-X3700H for your video games. It will offer the latest features and has the power to drive the 603s.

The 3600 is just a Suggestion. And the OP stated "I would say on average I listen about 70db." Not overly loud. He said he already ordered a Sub. Again just a suggestion

Thank you for the suggestions! I will for sure look into the x3700h since it has HDMI 2.1

Any recommendations regarding external amp for those mains? I hear the brand Outlaw quite frequently, tho I need to look more into separate amplification.

I'd run with just the avr first and see if you even need an amp. If you're listening loud enough to hear distortion or you start clipping then yes, and amp would be in order.

Will do, thanks!

This would be one of my suggestions for external amplification. Another consideration would be a Monolith amp from Monoprice.

Excellent I will keep those in mind. Will get things up and running and maybe do some volume testing and see if I run into distortion first.

I looked up the Monoprice amp last night. Outlaw Mono's are still more cost effective

Yeah, I would always use the AVR by itself first.

Ext Amps can always be added later.

But for most people (I think M Code mentioned the number 93% of people) only use AVR w/o any ext amps.

A long time ago I used a 50WPC 5.1 AVR that cost $400. It did just fine powering 5 speakers that all "dipped" below 4 ohm, one even down to 2.7 ohm.

Just use moderate COMFORTABLE volume. Should protect your hearing anyway. :D

I forgot they raised prices over there. Still competitive but Outlaw looks like a better value. Those are really solid amps too.

Either the X3600H or the X3700H should be sufficient without the need of external amplification at your loudness listening level, if you use the subs and set the LFE crossover not lower than 90 Hz.

Some awesome advise here thanks! Going to grab the x3700h and will play around with the crossover between 90-100hz. I generally listen around 65-70db maybe peaks to 80db during some action in game/ movie. I will for sure keep those two brands in mind for future expansions with external amplification if needed. First sub should be in Monday, so all good there.

The 2220 Outlaw at $700 for two amps is a better deal if that's all you need. However, if you want 5 to 7 channel unit the Monolith is a better price.

Thinking more towards the future here, but at what point would it be a good idea to start looking into external amplification? For instance I will be running 5.2 for now, but maybe next year will consider prepping for getting 4 atmos ceiling speakers. Also if that was the case, what combination should I maybe consider? Get a 2 channel amp for the mains, or maybe a 5 channel amp for the floor level?
