So called Media Units

In my seacrch to get a media unit with a built in electric fireplace, I've come to realize that very few new media units, especally with a builtin electric fireplace can accept an AVR the size of Yamaha RX-V1500/1800/1900 models let alone the new RX-A models. The units are either not deep enough, shelf space height and width is not high/wide enough to provide sufficient air flow or combination of both. Why prroduce media units when they cannot accept the heart of a media system? Its ludicrous.

I can't imagine there's a huge market for a media unit with a fake fireplace in the first place, but could also be more aimed at the tv/soundbar crowd?

The ones I've seen have the TV lifts in them so that when the TV isn't in use it goes into the back. No AVR happening in that situation. It's a cool idea, but like you said, it's for the less than audio inclined.

Wow- you’re right! It seems they’re all 15” deep or so (way too shallow) and fit components +/-15” wide (way too narrow). Most “real” AV components are 17” wide- I guess these are aimed at, as @lovinthehd mentioned, sound bars and smaller disc spinners.

I enjoy a challenge, though and will do some searching. What’s a good budget for you?

Here's my solution.

Bedroom system now completed.. 2.1 system only..

Nice setup. I went with something more compact. Surprisingly putting in the sub right in the middle of the room worked out pretty good.
