By the way, did you ever watch "Das Boot", a Wolfgang Petersen movie? That is quite a good top-secret mission movie. It was very well done and made it quite realistic.

My questions are not to you in particular, but the quote gives me a lead-in!

1) How much bandwidth does 8K require? I know a BD looks better than anything streamed on my system (I don't have fiber), so pretty sure I could not stream 8K (although I'm sure they will dummy it down for my limitations)!

2) Anyone know the "why" of Apple TV+ offering? Do Sony and Apple have a connection (part ownership, etc)? Was Apple the highest bidder? Or is Apple more secure wrt pirating? It seems like they would want it to be available via as many sites as possible!

3) What does it cost to stream? I imagine many movies are waiting until after Covid because I doubt they would get the revenue out of streaming it. Sony has deep enough pockets to play the long game (whereas a smaller operation might be more desperate to start gaining returns). Anything with Tom Hanks (esp. WW2) is a pretty sure-fire hit, so it seems like they are sacrificing some profits here!

and a curiosity - I wonder if Sony would take on a movie about WW2 with the Japanese and if they would exert any influence over the story-line? I know the Japanese history classes avoid discussion of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor as the start of their involvement!

Regarding your Apple TV+ question. What I read was that Apple purchased the movie rights for $70 million. I guess they have the rights for many years. The article I read said that Apple wants more content and the content they currently have isn't pulling in enough people. So easy investment for them if they can spend $70 million and grab a million or two new members just to watch the movie. I think Apple is offering a free week of their streaming and then it's $5/month after that.

Personally, I would just like one of the other major studios to drop a summer blockbuster on VOD. Charge $20-$25 for the release. Depending on the blockbuster, lets say WW 1984, I would bet a bunch that movie on VOD would easily make over $100 million in a week or two in the US. With studios earning 80% of the profit from VOD releases instead of the 55% from theaters, it just makes sense right now. I'm not against movie theaters, but with more people at home, take advantage of the situation. Give people something to watch and enjoy at home.

If you go back to 2006 you'll find Clint Eastwood made a WW2 movie from the Japaneses perspective. It is called Letters from Iwo Jima. Not sure if that's what you were wondering about.

Unfortunately all these older movies, including Das Boot, won’t look that great 4K or 2K.

If a 4K version of Das Boot became available, it should look better than any of the Hitchcock movies as it is more recent. The Hitchcock films look good in the 2K format. I have several of them.

We watched it on my 150" Screen with 4K PJ and Atmos sound.

I think the larger screen size and Atmos sound might have helped a little. But overall, I agree that it's not exactly a masterpiece or anything like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Forrest Gump".

The story is boring in a way, a short clip with his supposed girlfriend in the beginning and a flashback, nothing emotional. Then there is no short clips of his training but out at sea on his 1st escort. Not much of a story at all. Wife wanted to see it and then had to turn volume down.
Could have made better use of that time. Hope Apple at least breaks even.

I'm thinking Apple will recover nicely. Was just reading about their subscribers. They say's it's hard to gauge how many people are actually paying for Apple TV+ because Apple has been giving away a free year of service when you purchase a phone. Apple's last quarter of phone sales was almost $29 billion. Some analysts say they have 33 million subscribers while others say it's only 10 million. Wonder if those same people who got a free year will cancel service before having to pay $5/month. As of right now they're spending $6 billion on content for their channel. I think they're going for long haul as of right now. If any company can afford to take the slower road to build up it's base, It's probably Apple. It's nice that they only have around $250 billion in cash reserves.......haha.
