So I have this old Denon receiver, 3803, that I bought new about 14 or 15 years ago it seems. Still works and sounds fine, just no HDMI or any of the newer Dolby, so maybe time for an upgrade there. Its powering a 3.0 setup of DefTech 2002tl towers and clr2000 center speakers, connected to a 58" Panny Plasma. Mostly for home theater, but also music and some occasional gaming. The room it will ultimately go into soon is an open concept area of 24 x 31, with half of that the living room and the other half kitchen and dining room. Been checking out you tube about the new Denons and looking at last years models also. So what am getting at....is there much to be gained buying the latest greatest over last years model? The Plasma I will keep until it quits, although it has no eArc or even Arc for that matter, then maybe a 4k. The component connection to the receiver/tv gives a good picture. Would HDMI be an improvement in any way? Any advantage in getting the HDMI 2.1? Not trying to fool myself into thinking the system will be future proofed or anything like that as this tech seems to change pretty quickly. Just hate buying something then a while later comes one of those Homer Simpson DOH!!! moments realizing should have gone another direction. Not really stuck on one brand, been looking at Denon, Yamaha and also the Outlaw separates, but the Denon 3803 has been a very good receiver.

For speakers I am pretty much sold on the SVS Ultras for front stage, along with a pair of probably HSU 15" subs. The DefTechs can be used for surrounds. A 5.2 or 7.2 system is fine as not really interested in Atmos.

Just looking for advice or input from those more knowledgeable on the subject than I . Thanks in advance.

I think you'll find that unless you're always living on the bleeding edge of the tech, you'll be happy with yesteryear flagships or simply good stuff that is a year or two old. Depends if you're into all the extra stuff that isn't quite common (HDR, etc). If you're not getting into Atmos, then you have a lot of room to look at affordable upgrades that will bring you into modern age with connectivity (HDMI).

Maybe the Denon X3500H? Yamaha RX-A780?

Very best,

The last time I got Upgradeitis, life prescribed Lack- O'- Funds. Cleared it right up. I still have a 3803. Good toaster. Working on some Jiffy Pop as we speak. I may return to Denon next year. I might wait two years for next year's model if life still has me on those stupid meds.

You mean something like this?

You just described my system! Ha ha! Great speakers, I love(d) them. They'll have no problem filling your new space with great sound. They can really handle some power and sound great even at ridiculous volumes. I just bought some new towers from Ascend Acoustics and am breaking into them now and I'll likely be selling my Ultra towers with a heavy heart soon. I would keep them but I have to generate some funds to pay for my Sierras.

Your receiver is a great receiver for its time, but it's pretty outdated for sure. If you like it and want to stick with Denon I like the 3*** series and up and for Marantz it would be the 6*** series and up. Both will have most of the latest features and Audyssey XT32 for room correction, one of the better ones imo. I'm a Denon/Marantz guy myself. Newer models will be coming out tho and that usually means big discounts on current models.

That said, right now AC4L has some good ones in there like this Denon 3500 for $699 or the 4500 for $1049. Both are factory refurb, but the 4500 comes with a 3 year warranty. That's a pretty good deal and would be a worthy successor to your current receiver. The 3*** series models were getting pretty hard to find a couple weeks ago. Oh, they have a decent deal for Marantz SR6014 for $1119 with a 3 year warranty also.

If you happen to live anywhere near Mesa, AZ, you should ask Pogre what he wants for his speakers! The guy is OCD and dusts his speakers off at least once a week!
