Hi,
i purchased a yamaha rxv-685 from amazon which was amazon fulfilled plus prime delivery from a dealer in delhi.

I got it today but the yamaha box was sealed witha amazon prime label tape across as it didnt have the usual amaxon outer cardboard box.

The product looks fine but just wanted to know if theres anyway i can find out if it was returned by someone to amazon and the seller shipped it back to me via amazon or maybe its an opened box??

Regards,
Sandeep

If I bought a brand new AVR from Amazon that is sealed and looked brand new, I would think it's brand new.

But you could send Yamaha support an email and give them the serial number. They might be able to confirm that the AVR is brand new.

Did you try Pure Direct Mode to see if the sound is better?

Sound quality is often related to setup. Make sure you are using "Straight" mode. Or just try different modes.

ya was sealed with the prime sticker.I dont know if yamaha has any kind of stickers like on mobile packs where they say open the seal here.
Pure direct mode is also lifeless.

How will staright mode make it better.Trying to understand better.

I think the AVR is fine and you're likely dealing with a setup/speaker issue. Do you have any speakers right up against a wall or in a cubby hole? How about toe in? Run room correction and follow the instructions closely?

Straight mode removes all processing (eq) so you're hearing the unaltered signal played through your speakers. I myself prefer a little eq to liven things up, but I'm discovering some older music actually does sound better in direct or straight mode. Room and setup have a lot more impact on sound quality that I'd realized when I first started back into this hobby.

Lifeless?

What do you expect from the little cheap Polk S20?

Certainly not full-range lifelike sound.

I hate all Room EQ, including YPAO because they make the sound "lifeless". So I set YPAO to THROUGH mode.

Then set DSP to "Straight" mode, unless I want to use DTS NeuralX, then I use "SURROUND SOUND" mode.

You did not just say burn in! That's a myth. You seem like you're after sound quality improvements, but going down the wrong path. Speakers and room. Your AVR isn't the issue it's your speakers (and possibly setup). Have you considered getting some real speakers? You have a nice AVR. More than your current speakers deserve, really.

Subwoofage is another huge factor that a lot of folks underestimate too. We haven't touched on that with you yet...

Here we generally consider a refurb to be a unit that's been gone thru by the manufacturer's service center, how thoroughly is always a question mark, tho. Most refurbs are based on customer returns to dealers from a conversation I had with one of the largest refurb sellers here in the US and generally were functioning fine at time of return (returned for a variety of reasons). It is provided generally here in the US with a limited warranty and resold in a slightly different box a new unit would be sold in, sometimes a specific retailer specializing in such (like our accessories4less.com) or even their own websites.

What happens in India you'll have to research with Yamaha, to see if this unit was sold thru one of their refurbishing programs (if they have one) or just some creative description from the seller. Just because it's sold thru Amazon by a dealer doesn't mean much except for how much Amazon will stand behind a return. Do you have consumer rules/laws about such?

If he doesn’t have a subwoofer wouldn’t his spea sound “lifeless “ since they are bass managed and ran as small. I do understand those are not the best speakers, but wouldn’t running them full range help some?

I don't know how much "life" limiting the lower end on the speakers would bring outside of safety issues, but I'd tend to run them full range and just use the speakers at reasonable levels and with reasonable content (i.e. not trying to blast the intro to Edge of Tomorrow etc).
