Have I got the right gear?

I recently purchased a pair Edifier S1000DB (powered) speakers and a Yamaha AV Receiver RX-V385 because I wanted to get a system that I could use for HiFi as well as surround sound, should I choose to purchase more speakers. The trouble is that even with the manuals I am at a loss to know how to combine all of them to create one system and I think that in my haste, I may have speakers that are incompatible to the Receiver; can anyone help me to resolve the issue?

You are correct, you can not connect those speakers to that receiver.

To use those speakers with a receiver, you need a receiver with pre outs. They are generally mid to up market models. So you either need a different receiver or passive speakers. One or the other has to change.

Thanks Guy, I got the speakers paired with my laptop so at least that is something until I go full surround sound speakers. I thought that I did my homework because they were saying you can RC connect the speakers but that isn't the case. I got everything for a good price so I am not complaining.

Not time you shop for a receiver look for a full set of preouts. Models with preouts cost a little more in general, but give you a couple more options.

Thanks for that Ryan, as I already have the Yamaha RX-V385, I don't really want to purchase anything else so I will just buy a set of quality Passive Speakers. I only have a small living/dining/kitchen open plan and so going another Receiver is not on the cards now.
