I also think it could easily take 3 years before an effective vaccine was widely available. And that would be the new world’s record. Previously, the world record was 5 years for an Ebola vaccine.

TLS Guy likes the home team from the U.K. I don’t think their approach is wrong in any way, but I also don’t see any reason why the other vaccine makers should give up now. It’s too early to know anything for certain.

Here's an article from The Lancet showing some success in non-critical COVID-19 patients using a triple intiviral treatment:

Treatment with the triple combination effectively suppressed viral load in all clinical specimens, including the nasopharyngeal swab, throat saliva, posterior oropharyngeal saliva, and stool in most patients 8 days from treatment commencement, which was significantly shorter than the time taken in the control group, treated with lopinavir–ritonavir alone. The triple combination also alleviated symptoms completely within 4 days—a significantly shorter time than the control. The triple combination also suppressed IL-6 levels. The clinical and virological efficacy resulted in shorter hospital stays and facilitated infection control. This treatment regimen was also shown to be safe, with minor and self-limiting gastrointestinal adverse events of diarrhoea and vomiting. Do you maybe think that's why the UK and so many states are pushing to open back up? If it's really 3 years until we can get a vaccine theres no way we can keep doing what we're doing now if it's that long of a wait this level of restrictions are simply unsustainable for that long of a time period.

I have no inside information about how long it will really take to get an effective vaccine, and neither does anyone else.

It's probably true that we cannot maintain the present shut down for that long. Let's hope the vaccine developers get lucky, and that the SARS-CoV-2 virus takes the summer off.

I just went to one of my favorite restaurants today. Mexican place just reopened dine in only 25% capacity tables spaced far apart people well spaced workers and customers all wearing masks and workers had other ppe on pretty good turnout as well

It was reassuring to see a ton of people when I went driving around wearing masks and doing a really good job with social distancing

You see all the articles about the defiance you don't see all the good most people are doing

I'm cautiously hopefully optimistic about reopening if it's continued to be done at a staggered pace here in Texas and people do a good job like they appear to be with masks distancing hand washing

Well we won't unfortunately eliminate all covid fatalities and problems but we won't overrun our medical facilities and we won't continue to train wreck the economy which will bankrupt the hospitals anyway and then we'd really be screwed

It was a good positive hopeful day hope it's been good for everyone else as well

Luckily most of us here in TX actually care about the other people in our state. Well, everywhere really.

Yeah I can't blame you for any of that I'm on the front lines hell I have trouble keeping my psych patients clothes on let alone get em to wear ppe and when there aggressive well I have to get up close.
So I asked my family to go to Red River and I stay away from people as much as I can. But I sit in this house just way too alone.
So I take precautions and I get out just to be around people even if it's from a distance.
Kind off have to I'm hard wired to be around people it's why I'm good at my job you know? I just do it from a distance hopefully this will be over someday because I'm not built God didn't make me to be alone he just didn't build me that way
I'm just glad I got you guys to talk too you guys and audio it takes my mind out of being in this house alone grateful for this crazy hobby of ours and meeting u guys.
It's not so bad then when I'm bullshitting with you guys about audio or venting here on the steam vent I'm not sitting in the house feeling all alone
Appreciate u guys that's all. And I hope this virus thing we find a way through it. Cuz this ain't no way to live. Not if you have to do it all alone.

We'll get that beer soon enough. Glad we can all be here to help out. I've worked from home for years so this isn't all that different other than I can't just go to certain places I normally do. That and my kids are going a bit stir crazy.

I think it is in Switzerland where citizens are disciplined, protocols were followed and there was no ordered confinement. Schools weren't closed. Their statistics have been good so far. Extensive testing has been performed and is a key to better results.

Pretty easy to do when the people are disciplined and there are less than 9 million of them.

An update which is fascinating although it is bad news.

Something most experts agreed upon is that by the time we reach high enough immunity, we are to expect localized outbreaks.

Croatia continued to show excellent results and the number of newly infected dropped to 2-3 persons a day, many counties even reported no new cases.

An older man goes from an island to the mainland to be treated in the hospital for something other than corona. He gets checked and tested and is negative for corona. He gets admitted and treated and upon treatment gets released from the hospital.

He gets back to the island in the middle of the Croatian Adriatic and gets many visits from the family and friends who came by to ask about his health. Corona spreads like crazy and we spike in newly infected.

A huge mistake by the Minister of Health for letting people escape from the island to the mainland after they've learned for the corona spread. It's not that big of an island and could've been used as a natural quarantine.

I think this is the scenario that played out in front of our eyes that will soon enough be a very common scenario.

I am much more optimistic than that. Currently the Oxford Group are far ahead. They have demonstrated efficacy of their approach with MERS. If their current human trial is positive, and they will know next month, then they plan is to go ahead an inject a million doses by September. They are partnered with Astra Zeneca now. They also are working closely with the biological warfare unit at Porton Down. They are already making plans for large scale production and looking for other manufacturing partners. As they develop the vaccine, they are working on production at the same time. They rate their chances as having a success rate of 80%. I think this is on the low side. I think it will be very bad luck indeed if that vaccine is not a success. Their aim to have millions of doses ready by years end.

Their technique is a novel mDNA vaccine, which we have discussed at length in this thread. So the partnership is between the Jenner institute at Oxford University, the chemical and biological warfare unit at Porton Down and the NIH animal research lab in Hamilton Montana.

The biggest hurdle I think is getting enough manufacturing capacity ramped up quickly to get the world herd immunity up in record time.

Yeah, hopefully the vaccine they are manufacturing now actually works.

They are taking a risk by manufacturing the vaccines before it is even proven Effective and SAFE.

But I guess if they are not successful, the government is paying the bill anyway.

So by some miracle that they can get 1 million vaccines by September, who gets the first 1 million vaccines? There are 331 million people in the USA.

I will be keeping an eye on that vaccine in the pharmacy.
