One more question. Can I run the Marantz 2238B through the system without using it's weaker amp? I'll start with the Nakamichi, but can I switch without messing anything up? Tia.

Old Marantz units like that generally had a pre-out/main-in connection you could attach an external amp to....

Cool. I like the Marantz look. I actually have two. The smaller 2220B is going in the garage eventually. Anyone know if the Sansui 8080DB I have will even be strong enough for my 4 ohm Thiel's? I have a possibility of trading up to the 9090DB of not. Thanks

I'd think the Marantz units can work with your Thiels, but only up to a point. Certainly they're not very powerful amps but depends on how loud you listen and at what distance from the speakers.

The ST-7 and CA-5. The CA-5 has two more outputs on the right not shown. And spots for system remotes. Wired remotes?

And what do I do with this Digital input on my HDCD player? I assume the left and right go into the CA-5. So what's that? Tia

Yes appears to be a wired remote. Not sure what the question on this gear is?

Do you have a device with the coax type digital connection you'd like to play thru the player? At least I assume that's what it's for. Did you check the manual?

The only questions are what is the Digital Input on HDCD used for, and can I swap out Nak ST-7 reciever for the Marantz 2238B and not use the amp in the Marantz? I think I understand the rest so far. Thanks

Should I be playing something through that? That was my confusion. Not exactly sure why it's there.

Probably to simply use the dac in the unit would be my guess. Early digital....does the player even have a digital out? That would date it if it does not.

Not sure which is which, if the ST-7 is the pre-amp, yes you could use it as a pre-amp.

1998 is the date on the player. Thanks

I meant that most current optical disc players have both analog and digital outputs. DACs are available in so many units a current optical disc player would likely not have a digital input, altho some do for versatility.

FWIW the Nakamichi ST-7 I looked up is a tuner, not a receiver.

No idea what the difference is honestly, lol.

A tuner is a stand-alone radio reception device. A receiver is a combination of a tuner section (in newer units internet connectivity as well), a pre-amp section and an amplifier section all in one box.....
