You'd need to tell us more about the circumstances as well as what happened particularly when you tried the reset and any particular trouble shooting you've done. Have you looked thru the troubleshooting section of your manual?

What are you using for a source or sources to try? What particular reset, a soft reset or a full factory/microprocessor reset? If the latter, exactly what did you do and what exactly happened? You get no GUI on your display at all? Is the front panel lcd on the avr functioning?

I had similar problem when first setting up the 8500.
Had to do factory reset, then the setup asst appeared again.
PAGE 294 IN THE PDF MANUAL

I also unplugged all of the HDMI cables from the receiver and TV before resetting and then plugged them back in because, as I recall, when I first did the factory reset it didn't work. No idea why this worked, could've been a loose cable. Also now recall that I had my satellite receiver plugged in to the aVR , possibly turned on. So suggest only connecting the TV to the aVR and not to and the other components when you do the initial set up based upon my experience in connecting my AVR.

We're not mind readers. Let's back up. When the sound wasn't happening as the first problem, what was the source/input of the sound and how was it connected? Was a full factory reset done at this point rather than a soft reset? What exact procedure did you do for the reset?

Even without any kind of setup, you should be able to play some kind of sound, especially after a hard reset.

If there is no sound from any source, then something is probably wrong. Get warranty service.

I called Denon and went through everything that they said. Was ultimately inforrmed that the receiver must be bad, so could ship it back to them for replacement (ordered direct from Denon). It was then that I disconnected every cable from every device (but did not disconnect any of the speaker wires from the receiver), did a factory reset and then reconnected the receiver to the TV but did not reconnect the satellite or other players . Amazingly, the setup screen appeared on the TV. It had never shown up in the first place, even when I first turned on the unit. The receiver had shown that it was in setup mode, but it just would not show up on the tv, so couldn't complete setup.
Once the setup screen appeared, then everything else was easy.
My equipment is Samsung 4k (non HDR) with evolution kit, Directv satellite receiver, Pioneer DV47Ai, BDF6700 Samsung BluRay and the X8500H.

How did you do the full factory reset?
Turn off the power using
Power Button
.

Press
Power Button
while simultaneously pressing INFO and BACK.

Remove your fingers from the two buttons when “Initialized” appears on the display.

Just saw your comment about buying this without warranty off ebay, sorry to hear since normally you'd still be under warranty. That is the correct reset procedure. With tv and speakers and all sources disconnected can you get it to perform a reset?

Ouch. Next time you buy a used AVR, make sure it’s a Yamaha....Unless I start hearing about Yamaha’s going bad too. :D

So unplugging it and plugging it back in yields absolutely nothing on the LCD panel? It's a brick now? Did you do some sort of firmware update via wifi by chance?

ps along those lines, any electrical issues particularly like lightning, surges, etc?

Defective Yamahas are like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. The stories are out there, but there are never any reliable witnesses.

Out of curiosity I searched around a bit and stumbled across a few links to warranty and repair centers. I think it might be true...
