I am trying to fill the cavity in my fireplace to get my room more acoustically symmetrical. What would be your recommendation for a material or product to accomplish the task?

One place I called suggested I use their foam to fill the cavity, at a cost of $500 dollars!
I would think that I could use some pillows or towels and then a layer of acoustical foam followed by some sheetrock painted black. or something along those lines. Anyone have other ideas?

I think you would be many hundreds of dollars ahead by doing so !

I'd definitely at least try with what I had around the house to see if it makes the difference you expect before buying anything very specialized....and measure before and after to see what the differences are.

That's a really good idea! I was going to get some old towels and pillows to see if that made a difference.

You may be able to get foam board and cut to the opening up top to the flu. Then spray foam it in for tight fit. And then visually it would be not visible from the front.

Instead of spending $500 on a specialized material, I'd definitely use what I had around the house to test the acoustics like you are. However, I'd measure the room response before and after to see what the results of the efforts changes are.....
