I am looking into buying a 5.1 sound system but I need advice on what to get. I see right now on amazon that the klipsch 5.1 theater pack is going for $480.00 plus another $400 for a pioneer vsx-lx303 or should I get 2 pair of sony sscs5 for $118/pair, a sony sscs8 for $118, a polk psw10 10” subwoofer for $99 and a pioneer vsx-lx303. I want a 9.2 channel receiver, because Im thinking of upgrading to a 5.2.4 system later on. (I got the sony and polk idea from Audioholics “$1500 5.2.4 theater system”. Im going with pioneer receiver because onkyo tx-nr797 is now $680).
Please let me know what you think would be the better purchase. I am open to suggestions to any other systems that is about $1000.
Thank You.

Hi! Just a couple of questions, is wireless connectivity a requirement, and how big is your space? To me the glaring weak link with the Klipsch package is the subwoofer. It's not up to the task for much more than a very small room and lacks deep bass extension.

My room is about 15ft by 15ft. And wireless connectivity is not a requirement.

Generally look outside of packaged speaker/sub systems from a primarily speaker brand would be my first suggestion. Personally I'd start with a good 2.1 system rather than 5.1 with a limited budget like you have and add as I can save up or find good used deals. I could never recommend a Polk sub, tho.

Any tips on what speakers and sub to get? Not something big because my living room is small. I am a newbies to home theater.

Thank you, that help a lot. But, I was looking for a 9.2 channel receiver because I wanted it to be a 5.2.4 set up when I finish, but I don’t want to have to replace my receiver. Do you think the pioneer vsx-lx303 is a good receiver for what I’m going for?

I can tell you first hand that Polk PSW 10 is crap I had one. It doesn’t hit hard at all. Lots of port noise
doesn’t get low at all. You’ll be wasting your 100 bucks on it. Do what Shady J said get that M10.

You can get the LX303, but keep in mind that is stretching a modest power supply a whole lot to do 9.2 or 5.2.4. The good news is that it is in a small room. So long as you don't intend to play the system loud, that might work. If I were you I would do 7.2.2 rather than 5.2.4. There are a lot more sound mixes that take advantage of those rear surrounds than the Atmos height surrounds.

Well this interesting indeed. First I would consider the room, and seating. If your going to be up against the wall, there’s no point in going after 7.x.x and while I think 5.1.4 is a better experience than 7.1.2, being up against the wall also makes it hard to place rear tops/heights appropriately, but imo still better than x.x.2. If you can move the seating ahead and off the back wall, then you can get er a little better overhead sound and Atmos performance. Cramming a bunch of speakers around the seating area just for the sake of them will hurt performance more than help. I think your smart to think about the long run with the AVR and having it be what you need in the future, but that might mean as others have said, build up in stages. I think looking at klipsch can be smart as they’re easy to drive, and in a smaller room the power demand will be low. However the sub that comes with the kit you linked is a gutless turd(sorry). Imo, real subwoofers start at about 500 bucks. However, in a tight budget I like the Dayton sub1200 at 150 bucks you can get two(or even on for that matter), and will be better than the Polk OR klipsch. In fact Dayton makes some decent BS speakers too.(maybe @shady can link them).
If 1k is a hard number, I would probably do a lot of shopping at parts express/Dayton audio. As a noob your expectations vs experience are both low, so you only have one way to go. Up! The barrier to entry CAN be low, and as you gain experience you learn what is worth investing in(subs) and what’s not(usually electronics, but having appropriate channel counts and features should drive that). Sorry so windy...
So, is 1k a hard number?

They have an open box for $118.

Thank You, that actually help a lot. Yes, 1k is out of my budget. I’m looking to spend around $700 for a 2.1 system with the intention to spend about another $500 later on to make it a 5.2.4 system. The 7.x.x is kinda overkill because I wouldn’t have 7 good places to put around my small space. I am not looking for too loud because my living room also open up to another room and I don’t want to disturb others across the house.

The price for that sub is worth jumping on. It's a good choice for your budget.

For 15x15 room, I think 5.1.2 is pretty good. That way you can spend more money on quality vs quantity. :D

I would go for a 2.1 system for the time being. Here is what I would get:
Yamaha RX-V585
Monolith M10 subwoofer
Canton GLE 426.2

That system is just a hair over $1K. I think it would sound a lot better than the Klipsch or Sony setups that you are considering.
Instead of buying a REFURBISHED RX-V585 (7.1) for $300 (1YR Warranty), here is a BRAND NEW Yamaha RX-V683 (7.2) for $347 (2YR Warranty).

Or get an OPEN BOX VERY GOOD RX-V585 for $290 (also 2YR Warranty since Open Box from Amazon, not Refurbished):

Any good speakers for a 2.1 system that is about $150-$200 a pair? Used or new as long as they are reliable.

As far as "QUALITY", yes you can certainly get better quality when you build your system piece by piece, like everyone says.

But if you don't want to spend more than the original amount, you could just try out the Klipsch system Fulfilled by Amazon. If you don't like it, you can alway return it for free.

So the question is, are you willing to spend closer to $1600?

AVR: $347

Front L/R and Surround L/R: $500

Center: $230

Sub: $500

Total: $1577

What are you planning on doing for the 2 Atmos speakers? Use 2 small bookshelf speakers or 2 in-ceiling speakers?

I will be going with in ceiling. Any recommendation on what cable and everything needed for this set up? as I am still a noob and I don’t want to get the wrong stuff and having it not working. (Cable for going behind dry wall).
