Question about the jbl 305p mkii speakers

I doubt you'd find a better active speaker for that money....but that doesn't mean this speaker would be your best choice necessarily. I don't use youtube for music tho, prefer Spotify and Pandora for streaming services, or just my own ripped files. Speakers are subjective, hard to know over the internet what you'd like....
It's just that I was wondering if the jbl 305p mkii speakers will be more than i need to listen to to make music on Youtube sound excellent.

I understand but I simply can't answer that question for you, but they have been well received by many. Have you heard them at all?

The older non-Bluetooth model of the JBL 104 is cheap at Amazon. They won’t be as good as the other but may be good enough for a tabletop computer system.

The JBL 305p mk2 is a very good speaker at a very good price (I assume you are looking at $200/pr).
It is hard to answer your question as you have it phrased, but you might go to your local Guitar Center (or whatever pro audio store is in your area) and see what they offer. Mackie and KRK also makes some great powered monitors and have competitive standing.
However, I don't see anyone getting the LSR 305P and saying "crap, I really screwed up", if that is your concern!

However, if you will only be listening to them at your desk and not cranking them, these model R1280T Edifiers will give you high quality sound for $100/pr!

Pros for Edifier:
Remote control
Same speaker with BT connection is available for an additional $30 (model R1280DB)
More compact
Woodgrain sides and
Controls (volume bass and treble) on side of speaker
Use RCA jacks
Less expensive

Pros for JBL 305:
More volume these can get loud!
Deeper bass (Edifier has 4" woofer)
Amazing projection into the room - you can sit anyplace in the room (well, be sane about it) and hear good sound - obviously not a factor if you are always seated at the desk, but if you lounge in your office or have friends in the room, this matters.

The extra expense of the JBL definitely gets a fundamentally more capable speaker, however, the Edifier may be all you need and offers good value if you appreciate the fact that it was designed more for the consumer market.

One thing to be aware of is that YouTube sound quality varys from decent to horrible. Getting better speakers may actually make poor recordings sound worse as you will hear distortion more clearly as well as the music. However, I would expect you experience the same with your headphones assuming they are decent. Headphones generally have the advantage for sound quality vs price over regular speakers - being able to position the speaker 1 to 1.5 inches from your ear eliminates a few of the issues speaker designers are normally confronted with.

Speaker sound is very subjective. Some people like one more than another based on how they sound to that person. Some may like a horn tweeter over a dome, some will like a silk dome over a paper dome over a ceramic dome over a metalic dome. All of these speakers may be good speakers but for each person one will be preferred over the others. For this reason no person can tell another that one will sounds better than another.

That said, a good speaker will sound better than a bad speaker no matter what the source material is. This is because a bad speaker can add distortion to the material no matter how bad the material is to begin with. A good speaker will be less likely to add distortion so it will play the source material, good or bad, as good as it is possible for that speaker. Even the best speaker will have some limits though and may not sound like the best speaker to every person.

Youtube music is compressed and not as good as some other sources but you still want to listen to it with a good speaker as bad + bad = worse. Even then, though not up to what some people who like the best possible source material, youtube is still fine for some listening and should not be considered sub par if it is what you like.

Also, if you start listening to a better quality source some time in the future don't you want to have speakers that will do that source justice rather than have to start over? Get a good set to begin with and enjoy them on the source you have.

As for the electrical system in your house, the Playstation and even just a regular TV put a far greater load on the electrical system than these powered speakers ever will.

FWIW I was just reading that youtube no longer compresses audio, and cd quality is now standard (depending on upload). So some quality variances in youtube land....

I was wondering about that as I have heard a couple of YouTube streams on good speakers and did not detect the blemishes to the sound I am used to.
Probably the most common problem with compressed audio to catch my ear is what I call "gurgling cymbals"... kind of like the sound of bacon frying, but not really.

It's not info from youtube, just comments in another discussion I was reading so take it with a grain of salt. I just searched the subject and top result from google/youtube doesn't seem to agree with that discussion (but over a year old) https://support.google.com/youtubemusic/thread/168815?hl=en and this page doesn't either https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

Thanks for the followup!
I can say that I have been impressed with how good some of tke recordings are!
Not sure what to credit that to. Obviously a good recording up front, but I don't pay much attention to the format, just avoid the poor ones.

I just don't use youtube much (except in the what you're listening to thread if its an easy way to link an example). Some of the times I do the quality has been fine, other times not so much so probably who's doing the uploading (or maintenance of such as it seems youtube does allow audio upgrades).
