Onkyo TX-NR686 issue

Hi all,
I have a new 686 and I'm having the following issue. Sometimes when watching a movie on the Netflix app of the TV with sound going into the receiver via the ARC all of a sudden the text 'muting' flashes on the screen for a second or so and then the receiver shuts of. Obviously the sound disappears at this point. After I restart the receiver, there is still no sound. If I switch to a different input source there will be sound and when I go back to the TV sometimes sound comes back immediately and sometimes after a minute or so. Its possible that if I would have just left it on the tv source it would eventually come back anyway but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? This happens every time I watch a movie but only once as far as I can tell.

Sounds like a glitch. I'd first try a soft reset (unplug the avr for a little while) and if that doesn't improve things a full microprocessor/factory setting reset per your manual

Seriously, I have no life.

Agree with above. If that does not work, you should have a very low trigger to return that unit for something else. Onkyo are not highly regarded.

Hopefully like lovin said, performing a factory reset will work for you.
However I hate to even say it, but Onkyo has had issues in the past with their HDMI boards. One would think by now they have put those issues behind them, but it does seem to be a reoccurring issue.

FWIW for the last several years I haven't seen a reoccurrence of the type of issues the Onkyos of 2009-12 suffered for the hdmi/network board issues. I own one and had it fixed under the extended warranty so I kind of keep my eye out for Onkyo issues. Plus that repaired Onkyo is running great, no complaints and it was nice to see them take that extra step. If you like the Onkyo processing feature set, I see nothing wrong with them particularly any more than the others.

I think your probably right in that these issues should be past them by now. Still they do seem to creep up every now and then.
My oldest son's Onkyo integra, which can't be more than 2 years old. Not more than a few months of owning it, he had to have the HDMI board replaced like you did. But I haven't heard him complain since then.

Consumer electronics and their manufacture and quality control are what they are, and hopefully they do fail early if they're going to do so :) I just haven't seen a lot of complaints out of the ordinary about Onkyos for a while, and quite a bit of praise from owners of recent models as well.

I have an Onkyo tx-nr 838 and it has been used daily 4-8 hours since new. Mostly through ARC and the only problem I’ve encountered was solved by using a new hdmi cable. Mine had gotten bad from swapping them around to often and they would not make good connections.
