First Time Surround Sound Setup

Just bought my first home a couple years ago and am in the process of updating the lower level. I have looked around online and read a lot of information on 5.1 surround and I keep coming back on where to put the rear speakers. I do not want something that would be on pedestals just sitting in the middle of the room. I had originally thought of putting the rear speakers in the ceiling just behind where the couch would be, but I keep reading this isn't the way to go. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I will post some pics of the current demo going on right now and a planner that is to scale I used online to make sure everything fits correctly.

Thanks
John

For 5.1 you want your surround speakers more to the sides than directly behind you. Have you considered wall mounting them?

The left side is where I'm running into an issue because of the entry way right where the couch is. I would mount it where the half wall is but it will be farther away than the right side by 3 feet. Is that reasonable? I didn't know how much it would mess the sound up by.

Thanks

Most receivers have setup routines with room EQ that will compensate with delay for speakers that are at different distances so no, that shouldn't be a problem for your surrounds.

So I mocked up potential placement for speakers would something like this work?
