I have read through a couple pages and have not seen a question posted so here I go. I have a older preamp Ada cinema reference m2 I got this unit used. Also a proceed amp5 used also. I am wanting the True DD and DTS hd master audio. I could care less for atmos and x. I like the combo I have now with my old B&W’s cdm speakers. If I were to upgrade to a lesser preamp but with updated processors and such.... yes I may get the decoding but am I improving my sound at all? Take the outlaw 976 that I am sure is a great preamp but is it going to SOUND better than the Ada? Yes the hardware is newer don’t mean it will sound better. I am waiting for a Ada cinema rhapsody m4 to come down a little more. But this kinda has to do with new vs used vs avr pre outs. Has anyone of you guys had to do this kind of kicking around a idea but just need some thoughts/ideas.

I doubt the sound, aside from the potential advantage of the lossless codecs, would be significantly different. One way to find out....

My system for multi-channel is 20 years old, no HDMI. I get a wonderful experience from it for 5.1. And, via Airport Express I can enjoy iTunes wirelessly from computer to the system. Still, I wonder what improvement to my music and movie pleasure could be realized from a new AVR or Prepro. The TOTL Marantz Preamplifier looks like it might be awesome; yet, at $4500, that's way beyond my expenditure comfort. I also like the Sony STR-ZA2100ES AVR. At $1400 it's doable. At any rate, I'm pondering it all like you and when I think practically about the matter I likely could be very satisfied with the Sony AVR hooked up to my current speakers. Thing that stops me from making the purchase so far is the surround sound I get now from 5.1 satisfies completely making the lure of more channels not quite attractive enough for me to swallow it.

The newer AVPs won’t sound better or worse than the older ones, at least not in Direct Mode.

if you use the DSP modes or EQ (Auto or manual), all bets are off - some people might love them, some may hate.

So the real reason to get a new AVP is for the features you want.

Some people couldn’t care less about TrueHD and DTS-HD.MA. Some people couldn’t care less about Atmos and DTSX. Some people couldn’t care less about HDMI, 4K, or whatever else.

By used .. My RX-V1500 and RX-V1900 were both bought used and work like the day they were new. I'm on the hunt for an RX-A 2040/3040 models now so that I can pass 4K through the AVR. I doubt very much that I'll ever step up to 8K as I'm too close to retirement . :)

I have been a very fortunate as a bottom feeder, to have found very well off folks who dump their old trash to a local used/for sale site. I have acquired a Pioneer VSX-59TXI in mint condition (flagship 70 lb monster that blew my L4/L5) ultra 2, Onkyo TX-NR905 in mint condition (popped belly button bringing that in), and multiple higher end Denon AVR and Yamaha RXV-3800 etc. I’ve set up systems for all my kids for pennies in the dollar.

The Pioneer can easily hang with any separates. It does not have hdmi, but I don’t want it anyway. My tv has all the switching with a fiber out to receiver. The Onkyo is also an Ultra2 that I’m just starting to play with. Its bigbaddaboom.

I couldn’t afford any of these in their heydays. I think the Pioneer was $4k, $2k for the Onkyo, $1.6k for my Yamaha. I’m embarrassed to say what my RBH Reference stuff went for. A bit of patience grasshopper, snatch the pebble from my hand....

If you watch a lot of blu-ray then dolby trueHD and DTS hd master will be a good boost, is it enough compared to what you use now i dont know. Do AVRs/processors all sound the same, no they dont.
