Anthem AVM 60 11.2CH Preamp/Processor Review

The picture I'm looking at here shows -25 on it (not +) so I assume it's -90 to 0 like most AVRs today (Marantz can be set either way. I like the reference at 0 as it makes more sense to me. It does go positive, but that's amplified pre-amp values. 0 is maximum "passive" before the amp in the preamp kicks in. It goes up to +18 I think.

-35 would be pretty low volume after calibration, I think. I watch most movies at -6 to -11 here (I've watched a few at 0, especially Disney titles that seem lower level). Some compressed music needs to go back towards -18 or so. Uncalibrated is anyone's guess.
My Denon starts at -79.5 on the reference scale....are the Marantz units that different? A reference scale could start -90, tho. Still, if uncalibrated doesn't mean much. The manual does indicate max is 0, tho (p.26 of manual).

I didn't actually check it recently. It may be -79 or -80 (I'll look the next time I'm downstairs). I just hit mute if I need it that low. ;) At some point, it just goes to mute (infinity). An AVR could go down to -90, though. I really meant the negative scale to reference zero is common on many/most AVRs these days. I don't know if they all go to the same maximum negative value. It's rather arbitrary as it would be pretty difficult to hear much below -90, even for maximum signals.

Uncalibrated you'll get whatever the sensitivity of your speakers puts out, I think. So a Klipsch horn with a sensitivity of 98dB would probably be 8dB louder at "0" (or any given setting) than a speaker rated at 90dB. Once calibrated it should reference 105dB peaks at the 0 setting (save subwoofer).

I've looked at about 20 different photos and they all show negative numbers on the front panel. I like the reference at 0 as it makes more sense to me. It does go positive on the Marantz 7012 I'm using, but that's amplified pre-amp values. 0 is maximum "passive" before the amp in the preamp kicks in. It goes up to +18 I think.

It's positive 90 on mine and works it's way back to zero to get louder I bet you there's a way to change the way it scales the volume I'm just not seeing it. My onkyo in the bedroom can do that you can change the type of reference scale you use for the volume

Yeah I found nothing in the manual as to how to change either. No reference to another scale either. Did you run calibration, tho?

ps really odd you'd go from a low of plus 90 to max of 0, weird.

That is odd because it doesn't make much logical sense. On a positive scale, it should get louder with higher numbers as zero is the "off" reference instead. I can change my Marantz to do that. There is no option to count "down" to a louder number. Negative numbers are still less than zero (i.e. higher is still louder).

If you ran room correction calibration, reference is normally 0.

Cool yes I did normally I am just fine with -35 if I want to get crazy max I can realistically handle is around -27 so I'm in good shape for where I want the room to be. Thanks!!!

ARC Genesis sets my Dolby offset to -12 so the overall system baseline is based on 100dB.

The result is, my levels end up being around 62dB. I think it does this so that all my channels hover closer to 0. I generally get -3 or -4 with my fronts, and +2 to +6 with surrounds and ceiling atmos speakers. My sub ends up at around -5.

As a result, my volume control typically sits between -25 and -15, depending on source material.

Sounds awesome, but I've never had a room correction change my baseline off of 75dB like this. Genesis is the first to do that.

I just turned mine off did it all manual that's what I usually do with all my recievers although I ran Genesis multiple times it never changed my Dolby offset from 0

That's interesting it did that for your setup
