Hello everyone,
One of the belts on my Sony CDP-M555ES CD jukebox broke recently and I'm thinking of having it repaired, either professionally or by a friend. My question is, will any of the programming info or disc titles be erased from the players memory if it's left unplugged for a long period of time? By programming, I'm referring to the players "delete bank" function where the player will skip certain tracks no matter what the play mode. I spent a very long time entering all those titles and setting up delete banks when I first got the player and would hate to have to go through that again. I'm assuming it'll be okay as all that info has remained intact during any power outages we've experienced but I just want to be sure, thanks for any info you all can provide!
I have no experience with this, but on general principal, I would expect the control module to have a small battery (like a computer motherboard has) so you do not lose memory. The fact that a power interruption due to a storm doesn't wipe the memory reinforces this. It would be idiotic of Sony to have that programming (which could be quite extensive) lost if you unplugged it!
But have you looked at replacing the belt? The belt is effectively not much more than a rubber band (made of higher quality more stable material) that is simply placed over two pulleys! It is probably a good idea to unplug it, but if you don't want to do it yourself, just have your friend come over and replace it at your house! I would think of this as a 5 minute job for a pro and might take someone who is taking their time because they don't do it everyday (like me, for example) 15 minutes. Seems a shame to let it go into a repair shop queue where it might disappear for a couple of weeks or longer! The hassle is getting the correct replacement - when laid next to the old belt, the new belt should be just a little shorter.
Ah, here is a video (not your exact model, but I suspect the general layout/mechanism is the same-Sony made a variant of this for decades):
He actually mentions some people using rubber bands, but I would not. If the rubber band is too tight, it could wear out the pulley bearing and you will have a much bigger problem!
