Good day! I have an onkyo nr515 receiverwhich is capable of connecting a 7.2 sound system. Currently, i only have a 5.1 harman kardon speaker system but i wish to connect my spare two samsung speakers and a subwoofer. Does it make the sound better? Is it okay to have different brands? Thank you.

As long as the speakers' impedance isn't too low on the Samsungs not a big concern, and maybe not even then (if they came from an HTIB sometimes that's a concern). For surrounds, mixing different speakers doesn't mean a lot for movie content. Usually you want matched L/R/C up front as the major concern. Brand doesn't matter much but rather their specifications. Mixing different subs can be more difficult, tho. If done well and you have a sufficiently sized room you might like 7.2 more, hard to know. What are the dimensions of your room and where is your listening position?

7.1 vs 5.1...assuming you have a 7.1 encoded movie, and ample space behind the main seating area to accommodate the rear surrounds, I think it sounds better.

The samsung surrounds should be no problem..again if you have enough space....the two subs with different brands...I agree with post #2.

Final note on 7.1 content...I've had friends learn this the hard way AFTER investing in a 7.1 system...7.1 content is available mostly on Blu-ray so you must rent or buy. If you currently stream your movies on Netflix, Amazon, etc...you will not find much 7.1 content, if any.

I think going from 5.1 to 5.1.2 is A LOT better than from 5.1 to 7.1.

So get an Atmos AVR and install those 2 extra speakers as high up on the side walls as possible for Atmos.

Totally agree. Some atmos is way better than no Atmos.
IMO.....

Should add too. Ime, a well setup 5.1 system can actually be better than a 7.1 system that’s not set up very good. For example, if you have a couch up against the back wall, there’s no reasonable way imo to place rear surrounds. And if someone does put them in, they’re not where they’re supposed to be, like right above their heads and it’s just a distraction more than anything.

Any minute now, that one audio guy will be here to say that Atmos sucks. :D

Any pictures of the Samsung’s ? Properly used I think they can add some depth . Use as back or side, surrounds . Passive sub ? I imagine can Be used somehow .
I don’t even have atmos capabilities.
