Well I'm at it again trying to add to my system. I just picked up HSU sub's from marketplace and the guy said he was piecing out his equipment. He has an Emotiva xpa 5 gen 1 that he said he would be selling. After looking at it I noticed on the 1st channel the rca was a little crooked like it had been whacked once. What is this worth. He said he didn't know what he would ask but said he paid 800. I don't wanna offer something lowball and p him off but I also want it as cheap as possible. What would you guys offer?

Can you ask him if you can test it out at his place? Make sure all the channels are working and such.

Also what's your room size seating distance and speakers your driving. Outlaw audio for example is selling the 5000 for $600 brand new full warranty. He'll there selling a 7 channel with xlr's for $1000. You may not need the emotiva depending on your listening situation and there is actually really good new for about what you'd offer him for less the 800 for his

You'll need to replace the board. I've replaced the PC board you can pick one up from Emotive my cost was 18 bucks plus shipping. That RCA input jack is plastic it is broken or has a crack. It will eventually completely break. Now it is a time consuming replacement. When I first tore into the back of my XPA-5 1st gen, you have to first remove the hood, than all of the screws that hold the back, than remove all the pigtails that connect the board to the rest of the amp. Each amp there's 5 of them. There is a little blue glue that they used as umm I guess in case the connectors wiggle loose. Once you have the board out just reverse installation. Or take it to a audio repair shop. Just a guess, 150 for totall repair price.

PS..no more than 4 to 5 hundred. The repair if you can do that yourself will save you some coin. By the way my XPA-5 1st gen was shipped New to me by Emotiva with the Center channel input broken, it was cracked but I used it for a few years like that till it eventually broke completely and was causing my amp to trip.

I won't even take the gen 1 if it's free unless shipping is free (then I may think about it..). It's good value, but too heavy for no good reasons other than manufacturing cost, and I don't like the look. Other than that, $300 would be a fair price even if only two channels are working, but shipping cost for such heavy weight may kill the deal for me anyway.

PENG, your 100% correct, if I remember right FedX wanted over 200 hundred to ship my Elmo amp. Shipping is a deal breaker.

As far as it would be i would pick it up. No shipping. Room is 12w x 26l x7 h.

I was looking at outlaw audio as well. A question i wa as always curious about... im running a 5.2.3. Seating distance is roughly 9 ft from the mains 10 from the tv. The 2 are my front heights. If i amped my mains and cenrer snd left tge surrounds and heights on the avr amp, would the recieve a bit more ump due to the amps not being needed for the mains or center anymore?

You'll be fine, adding a amp will take a huge load off of your AVR. At reference levels and above you'll get better dynamics. Just all depends on a lot of other factors also. Room treatments, floor's, windows, doorways. Sub placement.

Based on the other post about repair, I'd probably investigate simply disconnecting/disabling the one channel (so it cannot trip the circuit) and consider it a 4 channel amp ... if a 4 channel amp would be of reasonable benefit to you.
I expect to pay about 60% for any used gear (which would price it at $480),then discount it $100 for the missing channel ($380),then it is a fairly old unit (I know it was sold in 2008),so I would probably be looking at $300-$325 as the most I would pay.
There are some serious Emotiva fans-boys out there, so he may be able to get more from someone else.

As far as pissing him off, it is not uncommon for someone to have an unreasonable expectation for the worth of his gear, and I have a strategy for that (this is no deception or trickery, just a fair-minded approach that allows me to sometimes, get what I want without anyone feeling abused):
Explain as I did above how you came up with the price you are offering. Comment that he may have been expecting more, and he probably can get more if the right buyer comes along, but after you took a good look at it you are willing to pay $XXX.
See how he responds to that if he is feeling violated then follow through with ...
*This is the part that prevents it from falling into a low-ball category!*
Just say:
I would be happy to have it for $XXX, but I appreciate that you may be able to get more for it; with the right buyer you probably can. Consequently, what I can offer is that I be your "backup plan". IOW, my offer stands for 2 weeks and if you have a buyer offer more, then you're good. But if you don't, my offer stands. Just let me know if it sells, or, at the end of two weeks, let me know if you want to sell it to me. After two weeks, I need to move on and find my next amp.

I don't know how that concept sits with you, but it works for me:
1) Rarely do I "need it today" so waiting 2 weeks is not a problem.
2) I take the attitude that if he can sell it for more to someone else, "good for him"! I'm good with that.
3) It gives him time (assuming no buyers) to realize he thinks it is worth more than it is and get comfortable with selling it to you for a low price.
4) Probably the worst aspect is knowing someone else might low ball him and he might come back to them with a price $25 above your offer as a better option than selling it to you.

For a reasonable man, your relation with this person should still be in-tact. You are not saying he is crazy for thinking it is worth $500, you are only saying what it is worth to you, and even then, you are clearly not being pushy or trying to manipulate him - you are offering him the security of having it sold (if he is willing to accept your offer),so he is in charge!

Paramount to this approach is your willingness to "leave it to fate" whether or not he gets the buyer that will out-bid you. For Emotiva, there are enough fan-boys, and plenty of people will look at the older, heavier, and hotter generations as being worth more than the newer generations - cool, let them have it!

If it doesn't pan out, for new gear, I would look at the Outlaw 5000, followed by the Outlaw 2200 Monoblock (especially if you can divvy the load between the AVR and 2 or 3 monoblocks)!

Anyone suggested he used the calculator to figure out his power needs first, which AVR/AVP is the amp going to be matched with? I don't know, just never impressed by the XPA-5 gen 1, I may be biased though.:D

I do think for must of us a ton of power isn't necessary I was thinking like an outlaw 5000
It's what I'm planning to get for my bedroom setup

Then again, overkill happens to a lot of us in various hobbies aside from audio, too :)

No PENG, your not biased, I had that XPA-5 1st Gen, paid 899 on sale it sold for 999.00 off sale. I would dare say Outlaws 5 channel is a much better deal than that XPA-5. If I remember right Gene ran bench tests, Outlaws 5 channel had better specs, plus a few hundred less. I never really thought that XPA-5 had enough gonads. Power supply of that amp should have been a lot better. It had a nice dynamic swing, but that was about it and only passed reference levels O- to +5 dbs. Who in their right mind would stay at that power output longer than a few songs.

Just curious....why do you need a power amp with that? I use a similar Onkyo in my bedroom (but a relatively small one) with medium sensitivity speakers and its more than enough....

Hah hah good catch Lovin! Honestly I don't. But I loved my crown xls 1502's I bought I matched them against the Emotiva Gen 3 if u remember and they held up well. Sooooooo I couldn't bear to let them go and sooooooooo even tho the prime towers with the Elan surrounds are way overkill as well since I couldn't bear to let them go I figured why the heck not? :p The funny part is those amps aren't even getting tickled in that room size I listen at 10 below reference level on that onkyo. But it sounds great and I might as well use em ya know? :D

What speakers are those?
You might want to consider using some of these to elevate your speakers:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JLXNWKL/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?psc=1&pd_rd_i=B07JLXNWKL&pd_rd_w=HsW07&pf_rd_p=45a72588-80f7-4414-9851-786f6c16d42b&pd_rd_wg=XWcb6&pf_rd_r=JHSJ4ZFNFNQ8PVCCEX1S&pd_rd_r=be5e0ef6-a85e-4e9e-aa2b-fbcb2e316dc3&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyUUpaREY1VFE2M1hYJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTY4MDU2MUxLTFVUNlEyTTRQNSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwOTk0NTI3MzJPODJaR1dUTTAyRCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2RldGFpbCZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
They are dense enough foam to provide a solid foundation (not cushy under the weight of a normal speaker).
You might buy a couple and make sure they work for you before committing to an entire setup, but they work well for me!

Just curious as I said. I like my Crown 1500s too...the only one in the bedroom is running diy subs. I rarely can go to -10 in the bedroom, it has to be a movie/service with low output....-20 is most I listen at in there for the most part, and more like -30 to -25 range. Using equipment you have is always golden in my book. I hate selling audio stuff (why I have four multich setups and a 2ch too :) ).

Hey KEW! Those are my old SVS prime towers I was finicky with them in my old place but that's due to the room not them it was too big but in a room like my bedroom they sound really really really well. If you don't push them past a ceartin point they are a great speaker. And in my smaller bedroom they don't need much to drive at all

Thanks so much on the speaker stand tip I'm so going to try those out!!!!
