Did the best I could with free app. Tomorrow I will get REW readings one way or another.

My wife keeps complaining that the sub sounds boomy and depending on what I’m listening to it does change a lot. I get up to find the power turned off to the sub.

Receiver with bass management will help a lot but that’s not in the cards at the moment.

A sub in the corner will sound boomy unless you equalize it. If you can equalize it to remove the inevitable peaking frequency, then it will sound great. Typically, equalized corner placement will get you the highest output, the lowest extension and fewest nulls. By contrast, mid-wall placement typically gets reduced output, poor extension and multiple nulls.

App is magicplan, nice thing is you can use your smartphone camera to measure out your room. It only takes about 20 minutes to figure out the app but here’s a couple tips.

Exit room to rotate room, you cannot rotate objects in room.

Click on a wall in your room and click details to edit size W/D/H

You will need to edit length of walls but using your camera to get basic layout of room took me two tries and 10 minutes to get it close.



Thanks for the advice on moving my sub, will try that today and see if I can make my wife a little happier.

I think I’ll move it to the center of the wall until I can get a receiver that can equalize the sub.

Have you tried near-field location of subwoofers? My LP is a loveseat recliner that is just over 4' wide, and I am considering flanking it with dual subs - one on either side. Wondering what your thoughts are on this.

With the combination of sub in the corner and a vented sub, I suspect your wife is right. You will typically get a fair amount of room gain in the low frequencies and that sub is designed as close as possible to getting a flat FR (in an anechoic chamber!), so after room gain, you can expect to have bass that is too hot at the lower frequencies. It might be good to take a measurement with the sub in the corner to give you a baseline, so you can see how much improvement you got from moving it.

However, the real reason of my post is to ask if your wife normally listens at a different listening position, because with bass, being a few feet apart could make pretty major changes in what you are hearing. So listen from where she hears the boomy bass to make sure you are listening to the same thing!
