The SVS perforated steel grill saga

Not everyone likes the aforementioned grill on the SVS SB2000, PB2000, and other up-market subs. I don't mind it and do appreciate how tough it is, but I have only two places in my room for a sub and the better one puts that grill on my SB2000 touching the left rear plinth of my left KEF R500 speaker.

A couple years ago SVS made a limited run of SB2000 in gloss white, and those had a traditional flat, fabric-covered grill. The smaller SB1000 always had it, now we see it on the 1" bigger box. Several pinged SVS to get those in black, or at least in white because it wouldn't be too hard to change it over. The SVS rep on the other forum said they only made a few extra, to account for any losses in warranty. No chance of them making black ones, Ed said.

After a few months of haranguing him, he relented and did send a drawing of the grill to a forum member in California, along with two sets of attachment pins and pressure-adhesive logo plates. I had started the thread saying I'd make some if I had the info, so that member did contact me. I got the drawing and hardware, and got to work. My son prepared stock by laminating to sheets of 1/2" MDF to make up the 1" thickness we couldn't buy locally.

I started by turning the 2-D drawing into a 3-D model on Solidworks CAD system at work. With the permission of my direct supervisor and his boss, I was able to use a CNC metalworking machine, a 1/4" carbide router bit, and a 5/8" corner-rounding cutter to make a couple. Every dimension is within 0.1mm of the print. Friday afternoon I clocked out early and got started, Saturday morning I went back and finished cutting. When I got home around 1pm, I painted them. Just today I put the finishing touches on by covering with fabric from SimplySpeakers.com and pounded in the barbed metal posts supplied by SVS. Here's the result of my efforts.

Couldn’t just move the sub an inch over?
Nice work though!

Nice! I am not a fan of the aesthetics of the SVS grille myself but do appreciate how effective they are. I do go into that a bit in an upcoming review of the 3000s actually. This is a cool project. SVS ought to think about keeping alternate grilles like these in stock for people who like a nice looking grille and don't need it to be bulletproof.

Not really. There's an active door right there and placement of the sub limits how much it can open. Anything less than 90 degrees and stupid people will hit the sub with the door. That's another issue with the metal one, it's quite unforgiving if someone was to actually hit it hard with the door.

Nice work. This is something I'd try. If I had a job where you do. And permission from my bosses. And the skill and knowledge to use the machine...

The SVS grille is certainly useful when you have children around.

Somewhat. There's still pretty big openings at top and bottom with easy access directly to that active driver.

There is that, but at least little chance of a foot accidentally kicking in the driver, as long as the grille is in place.

Am I the only one who likes the industrial look of the the grille?

I think the grille is fairly nice when I rotated it 90 degrees, but I do wish that the curvature of the grille was less so that it would not add so much to the length of the subwoofer.

The steel one is "ok" with me as I've lived with it for almost 4 years now. Compared with the one I made though, it's a night & day improvement in the looks in my room, with my speakers and other décor.

I like it. I had an SB2k in my house for awhile(paired with my cylinders), and thought it looked pretty nice. I like industrial design, and nuts and bolts kind of looks sometimes. In my room it’s pretty gutless, but in a den or smallish bedroom etc, it’s a very nice little sub.

Sorry, I got nothing. I was a LONG time ago. Your best bet is contact SVS because they may now have a grille for you, or at least the hardware.
