Yamaha r-n803 stereo amp setting up to get sound from TV via optical 1

Setting up my Yamaha R-N803. Stuck on how to get sound from TV to receiver. I connected optical cable to optical output from TV to optical input to receiver. No sound. Message from set-up says 'Not available'. Double checked physical connection with optical cable, and cable is connected.

I have iTunes on my Mac mini connected to receiver using ethernet cable, and this works fine over AirPlay. Tuner also plays. Speakers and headphones work.

Don't know what to do from here and would greatly appreciate advice. I found no threads about the r-n803, so I suspect I'm not searching the right way, since this is a fairly popular network player

Might see if it's the cable by swapping with a known good one. Might check input assignment for the input on the receiver you're using...what input are you using on the receiver? The manual doesn't have anything that helps?

Also check audio output assignment on your tv.

Thank you. I had already tried that but I went back and tried again with a third cable and still no help. But when I used the OPT 1 output from the TV into the OPT2 input on the receiver, problem solved. I guess the TV output doesn't necessarily correspond to the input on the receiver.

Probably has more to do with input assignment as to what Opt 1 vs Opt 2 on the receiver was setup for (and should be in the manual). I wouldn't assume that a match of Opt 1 on different components would line up at all....

Right, had to be the input assignment. I see now that the OPT1 output on the TV would only line up with the OPT1 input on the receiver 50% of the time , by chance, since there are only two OPT outputs and two OPT inputs, and the components were made by different companies.

Looked at the manual for such, just indicates there are separate input selections for Opt 1 vs Opt 2, and even on the remote so assume you had the input selection to Opt 2 all along?

So all this time you tried to use the Opt 1 input on the receiver, it didn't work, but when you moved the input to Opt 2 on the receiver the Opt 1 input started to work? Or did you not try both input selections on the avr? Even the remote has separate inputs for Opt 1 and Opt 2.....odd.
