I know this has probably been answered before in so many words, but I was unable to find anything through the search. To make this short, I'm having an issue getting sound from the audio return channel. When I first set my system up, it worked fine. Went away for the weekend, came back, and it wasn't working. Got on the phone with Samsung (TV) and they walked me through a couple things in settings (that I had already looked at) and deemed it a probably HDMI cable issue. The cable is brand new and had previously been sending the audio, and was still currently sending video from the receiver to the TV so that didn't seem like the issue to me. Got on the phone with Sony (receiver) and they walked me through some different troubleshooting steps. Basically, they had me power cycle both the TV and the receiver as well as try a different cable. This ultimately fixed the issue. After I got off the phone with them, I reconnected the new cable, and it was working fine. The next day, same issue. I unplug both power sources and both ends of the cable, plug everything back in, and it works... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It seems to work fine until the next day when everything has been sitting in standby for a while. No idea what the heck is going on. Is this an ARC issue in general? Is this the two sources having trouble communicating for some reason? Should I just go back to using my optical cable I used with my old, HDMI-less receiver?

Connect everything to the reciever. If you use the TVs apps you can use optical for that. The optical should give the same quality signals as HDMI ARC.(which is not neccessarily as good as direct HDMI from other sources to the reciever)

Ok. I have all other sources connected directly to the receiver (PS4, Chromecast). I just used the ARC for audio from the TV's apps like Netflix, Hulu, etc. I was just under the assumption that the signal from HDMI ARC would be better than the optical. So I shouldn't have to worry about certain signals not being able to be passed through the optical connection?

That is very true if your TV and AVR can do eARC.

Oh, ok. My receiver can do eARC, but not the TV. So just stick with optical until I upgrade to a TV that has eARC?

HDMI ARC is still better imo, so I would get it working again if it worked before. It is tricky as there are quite a few settings on both side (TV and AVR) that you have to be done right.

What, for metadata in DD+? What other advantage might current ARC/HDMI have?

I'm no expert by any means, but I feel I have a good grasp on most things tech related. As far as I can tell, all the settings are as they should be. The audio out setting on the TV is set to the HDMI ARC (it actually does this automatically when it detected it was connected to an ARC device). The receiver is set to HDMI ARC active as opposed to off or eARC. I do notice that when it randomly stops working, the settings for the audio out on the TV have been set back to the TV speakers. Even when I set it back to the HDMI, there is still no sound until I do the nonsense described in the original post.

Right there is where you're getting over my head ha. That I would not know, and need taught or given advice. Is there a reason I should try to get the ARC issue resolved to take advantage of something? Am I going to be missing out on anything by just using the optical for streaming through my TV's apps?

The only advantage with HDMI ARC for audio from your tv would be a streaming service using Dolby Digital Plus (DD+), as it can provide metadata for Atmos. Otherwise afaik the audio streams for both ARC HDMI and optical are limited to lossy 5.1 (Dolby Digital, DTS). Some tvs also don't provide more than 2.0 via ARC depending on source. eARC (HDMI 2.1) isn't really here yet but does have higher capability down the line. I found ARC to be too troublesome to bother with even when I used tv apps, which I don't any more.

I see. So Netflix, Hulu, or Prime don't use DD+? It didn't seem like it was going to be troublesome at first ha. Just hooked everything up and changed one setting on my AVR and we were good to go...so I thought. I thought I was gaining something by using the HDMI over optical for some reason. If that's not the case, I'll most likely just revert to optical unless someone else has a solution to whatever problem I appear to be having here.

The trouble with ARC/HDMI I had was it always wanted to use the "tv" input on my avr, which I didn't want necessarily when turning on the display. Some of the streaming services use DD+ like Netflix, Amazon Prime (at least my Fire Stick provides such), believe Hulu is mostly 2ch. If you don't have an Atmos setup I wouldn't worry about using optical at all....

Gotcha. I don't currently have an Atmos setup, but plan on expanding into that in the future. I guess I'll worry about figuring ARC out when I get to that point. Thank you! And thank you to everyone else who offered their words of wisdom! Although I have a solution of just switching to optical, there's still that part of me that wants to know WHY exactly I am having this specific issue. So if anyone comes across this thread, and has any ideas, I'm all ears!

HDMI ARC is known for having a lot of issues. Different chipsets and brands dont always play nice with each other for what appears to be many hard to find reasons.

HDMI altogether has issues, ARC is just one of them. Usually within a brand's ecosystem they tend to work well, but mix brands and....

If you have 4K video the audio lip sync delay on the receiver may need some manual adjusting.

How would you then connect the following:

Apple TV 4K - Media Player Input
Marantz SR6013 (Monitor 2) non arc?
LG 4K OLED - Input HDMI 2

Thanks

So you're specifying using the ARC HDMI port and the discussion is about not using ARC..?
