I suppose many of you are familiar with this app. It can be helpful for local recommendations for restaurants and services. It is also quite entertaining, at least in my area. Somebody will complain about a driver, or a grouchy neighbor, etc. When that happens, the generational difference in people becomes evident. A prime example was a recent complaint about an older man who doesn't like people letting their dogs poop in his yard, and is not shy about letting them know.

People on the thread were unkind. Thru about 50 posts, neighbors suggested to call the HOA, call the police, hold a block party where everyone gathered in his yard. He was "diagnosed" with mental issues and an unhappy childhood. His description and address were published. This guy was crucified because he yelled at someone for letting their dog poop in his yard. Crucified because he was unkind. See the irony? Snowflakes... and I'd bet the farm they are democrats. If anyone isn't nice to them, there's something wrong with that person. They cannot see the log in their own eye. Sad, but all too common.

Nice! It's really amazing the money that people spend on animals. I get it that we need animals for food. Service dogs, but what is it with animal lovers? You see commercials begging for money to support animals. But yet millions of human beings are homeless. You can get locked up for mistreating a cat or a dog but you find a human being homeless sleeping in 30 degree weather no place to go no food and it's ok. That just doesn't look right.

I don't see your point. You get locked up for mistreating homeless people too. And you're perfectly free, Phase 2, to offer any homeless person you find food, money, or invite them into your home.

Damn right.
I’d take my air rifle and hand out a lead suppository to the dog $hittin in my yard. I don’t have a dog, and $hit in my yard is a big reason. I’d like to dump on the front step of every A hole that commented against that guy.
People suck and need to wake up.

It is entirely possible those people are just asssholes. Political affiliation probably doesn't apply. I know plenty from all parties/generations/walks of life.

Sounds like the old man moved into a neighborhood that doesn't exactly share his values. I would GTFO.

I have that app too, luckily it's more of "is this anyone's dog? Just wanted to ask before I call animal control" or "anyone else have this random dude walk up to their door and just walk away? Weird."

Assholes comes in all sizes, gender, colour as well as religious and political affiliations. Some people, though, have an urge to blame anything they don't like on "those others", which, not incidentally, makes them assholes too.

Edit: added a missing 'not'.

herbu, you need a psychiatrist. It seems like nearly every post you make is part of some paranoid vendetta about democrats or liberals. And they all read like this nonsensical post; some issue that bothers you results in derogatory political assumptions you've made with no data. The only thing that's sad here is your antisocial behavior.

Ugh I fell for this clickbait... post had nothing at all to do with Nextdoor. Same bullshit could have happened (and regularly does) on Facebook, Instagram, Craigslist, Twitter , you name it.

As we all know, only democrats insult people and call people names and say mean things on social media. Damn I will be so glad when we vote that Democrat out of the White House.

Funny. My point is that some people look to an authoritative organization, (HOA, police), to handle any situation that makes them uncomfortable. The circumstances of their discomfort don't matter. They don't like somebody, or somebody doesn't like them, and they want somebody else to take care of it for them.

To me, this trend in behavior seems largely to be favored by certain groups. It is the same groups that favor big government because that's what big government does. So to those who bristle at my observation, please explain where you think I'm wrong.

The authoritarians I know of lean overwhelmingly republican. All of the subdivisions around here are fairly conservative and are considered safe republican districts. These are the overbearing HOA types.

You really need to get out more.

I would bet that most HOA leaders are lawyers, rather than Republicans. Your area may be different.

I have a customer whose HOA won't let her put a statue of Buddha in her yard because they don't allow religious objects. Her husband sent a lengthy letter explaining that Buddhism is a philosophy and not a religion because it doesn't have an actual deity. Crickets.

I don't plan to ever live where an HOA can tell me what I can/can't do.

I've lived in five communities with HOAs, including my current one, and I'm a past president of an HOA. Most HOA leaders (meaning board of director members or committee chairs) I've encountered are not lawyers. Some are, but I would say the biggest groups I've encountered are retired people and empty-nesters who have the time for this sort of thing.

The overwhelming objective of every HOA I've been in has been keeping property values high. So exterior home maintenance, landscaping maintenance, any exterior changes (especially colors),which plantings you can make, placement of stuff like basketball courts and trampolines, I think you get the idea. And the HOAs have teeth in their enforcement, because in every state I've lived in the HOAs can fine you and put a lien on your property if you don't pay their sometimes high fines for non-compliance.

In the areas I've lived in behavior problems are the purview of the police, not the HOA. So herbu is probably incorrect in his assumptions. Even in HOAs with security patrols, like the one I live in now, they are typically powerless; their only course of action is to call the police. Often communities like my current one and the last one I lived in have private streets and gates, and that means road maintenance and parking enforcement. Yeah, parking enforcement, because the police typically do not have jurisdiction over private streets. So if some jackass blocks your driveway you have to get the HOA to have the car towed.

The most restrictive HOA community I've lived in had rules that any visible window coverings had to be white on the exterior-facing side, and you weren't allowed to park any cars in your driveway or the street unless your garage, and every house had at least a two-car garage, was fully occupied by cars. Parking in the street overnight wasn't allowed at all. We had a full-size Bronco at the time which wouldn't fit in the garage due to inadequate garage door height clearance, so we parked it in the driveway. That was an extended disagreement, but I prevailed because the HOA refused to pay for a better garage door. HOAs are a PITA, but they do increase property values.

In the HOA where I live, the leaders are sandlot politicians. They couldn't get elected dog catcher, so they stepped down to HOA. Some of them were also unsuccessful lawyers. In my experience, they try to intimidate home owners, but in reality it's all bluff, as they are more easily intimidated.

That’s what I’ve seen too. Assholes on a power trip since they have no real power of their own. Overgrown classroom bullies really. I’ve never loved anywhere with an HOA but know plenty who have. It’s nice to set a standard for a community, because who wants to live next to a junkyard? But some of these guys and rules don’t even make sense. I’ve read more sensical ramblings from kindergarteners.
