Picture is blinking

I have a Yamaha RX-A780 the output from the Yamaha goes in the Samsung TV UN55MU6300FXZA and the input into the TV is HMDI3/ARC. Yamaha is new TV is 2 years old. I reently installed a new HDMI cable the other had degraded. After it is on for some time the streaming image winks on and off. It does it on netflix and hulu. TV on antenna is fine. I am thinking I have a bad cable? Is there some way for me to hook this up so the streaming is to the TV and just the sound goes into the Yamaha? My cable is run up into the attic goes over a few stud bays and then down behind the TV. A pain to change out.

How long is that cable? I have a feeling you need an active cable, or need to send HDMI over cat 6. If the cable is over 25 feet that is likely your issue.
If the TV has audio Toslink out you could use that, but it is not the best solution.

Install flexible conduit- it will make life easier when cables go bad or something new comes along. May be a pain to install, but once it's in, you just feed the cables through and don't need to go into the attic anymore.

Make sure the cable isn't directional- what brand and part number is it?

Make sure the HDMI settings are correct, in the AVR and TV. If you don't need 4K, set the resolution to the next lower number and choose Auto for both. What streams Netflix and Hulu? If it's an AppleTV, Roku or BD player, its settings need to match the TV and AVR.

I think the run is @ 25-30 ft, but I had to purchase a 50ft cable. I really don't want to go with a cat 6 since I have to power it at both ends. It worked fine for 2 months then started having problems. I will see if I can make a 25ft length work,. Thanks. Brian

What is the turn-on sequence of your equipment? If you don't do it the same every time, try turning the AVR on, wait a couple of seconds before the TV goes on and wait 5 seconds before issuing an input command for the AVR. I suspect this is an EDID problem. If that doesn't work, turn everything on and let it start blinking, then unplug the HDMI from the TV, wait a couple of seconds and plug it in.

What type of source are you using?
What type of TV?

With your recent upgrade to a new receiver, are you now using 4K material instead of 1080p?

That would be my guess, which means you just jumped from around a 3Gb/s signal to a 10Gb/s signal or even 18Gb/s signal. That's MUCH higher data rates than your previous setup was using and requires a much higher quality cable.

At distances of 25+ feet, you should be using an active cable which is rated to 18Gb/s bandwidth. There are some passive cables which claim to handle that speed at 30' as well...

Fiber optic cables are considered some of the most reliable in terms of speed. Fiber can run WAY beyond 18Gb/s in terms of speed, so it is just the electronics at the end which are limiting the speed for these cables. Pricey, but reliable from most that I've read...

Test by laying them across your floor and using for a few days first.

Picture and sound both are phasing in and out.

If nothing ahead of the TV in the system is able to pass 4K, set it to Auto. Do that in everything- BD player, AVR....

You are so right about CEC, on my AVR, it was set to on, plus (auto) which drove my unit nuts! It was constantly switching everytime when a commercial or changing channels so off it is.

It might be a faulty HDMI board so did you try different inputs and outputs?
