Drama Mode on Yamaha Aventage A870

Hello Experts

My current set up is as below
  1. LR - B&W 603s 2019 model
  2. C - B&W HTM 6
  3. Surrounds - Bose 301 series V
  4. AVR - Yamaha Aventage

For Movies I use the Drama Mode which sharpens the dialogue BUT the output comes out of the Center Channel and the Surrounds ONLY. I like it that that way too.
However , the Left and Right Floor standers have no sound coming out of them. The display on the AVR shows all the speakers being used.

If I keep it on stereo or 7 Channel, the speakers work perfectly BUT the detailing and sharpness is not there.

Is there some way or mode that I can use to ensure that in Drama Mode , my LCR and Surrounds all have the crispness and sharpness.

Also if any one knows how the "Livelineness" & " Reveberation" factor on the Yamaha avrs are to be used, I will be eternally grateful.

Thank you.

The only “DSP” modes I would use are 1. Dolby Surround and 2. DTS NeuralX.

Otherwise, I would use “Straight”.

If you want better Dialogue, boost the Center Speaker Channel Levels by 3 or 4 dB or more if you have to (depends on movie, room, speakers, etc. Don’t be afraid to play around with the Center speaker levels. The salient purpose of the Center speaker is Dialogue, so do what it takes to make it sound good.

If you use the Android or iOS AV Controller remote app, you can also adjust the Dialogue level.

Thank you so much my friend. The app you mention- I have downloaded the Yamaha app - are there any settings that are available on the app BUT NOT on the remote.

Your settings are a revelation- I have enabled the Extra Bass, Enhancer and YPAO volume :). will play around with it now.

I am watching Netflix with the LG OLED C8 ARC thru the Yamaha. Straight seems to be a very good option.
Thank you for your advise.

Figured out the Trim Function makes the speakers louder and clarity better.

I am not sure since I don’t even use the actual remote control that came with my Yamaha. :D

I am able to just use the AV Controller remote app 100% of the time. So there is no need to even use the actual physical remote control. :D

All the Yamaha RX-A870 options/YPAO settings can be accessed by the remote with the on-screen display, the app or your web browser if the AVR is connected to your home network.

You can manually change all the settings (RX-Axx30 and up only) by putting in the AVR IP address, followed by forward slash and entering “setup”. RE: http://192.168.1.165/setup

You may want to also try the DSP/Movie/Sci-Fi option with "dialogue lift", anywhere from 2 to 6 dB's max, for your center channel.

Thank a ton. I tried removing all the Extra Bass/Enhancers/YPAO volume etc and even for a 7 channel mode it sounds so clear and crisp. Thank you once again. I guess as sound is individual and unique to the room, my learning and tweaking will continue till I convince myself that I reached audio nirvana.

I don't use any other modes except 1) Straight (for Atmos and DTSX) and 2) usually NeuralX. I might use Dolby Surround mode (DSU) 1% of the time. So it seems 99% of the time I toggle between only 2 modes : Straight and NeuralX.

Before they invented NeuralX, I would probably use Straight mode 100% of the time.

NeuralX changed the game for me.

So it's real easy for me on the AV Controller remote app. For the most parts, I use 4 functions:
1. Power on/off
2. Straight
3. NeuralX
3. Volume control

Since I use my PC for all media sources, I don't even have to change Inputs.
