It may just be a speaker specific plug in. Some HTIB’s have specially made plug ins for there speakers.

Moved into a new home which obviously had some speakers on the wall, but cannot identify this type. Help?
It's a wiretap! Run!!

No, first hit it with a shovel and then run!

Just kidding, it looks like some sort of detector to me. Something that should, perhaps, turn on the aircondition when the temp. rises and swithces it on. I have somethin similar here:

Click on the image to have a closer look. It's a thermostat on the end of the cable. It turns that vent on.

Don't worry about it. It is likely some proprietary Chinese home theater in a box garbage. The wire doesn't even look like speaker wire.

If those wires all run back to a central location, and you're looking to use those wires for new speakers, then just chop off the proprietary ends and connect the bare wires inside to your own speakers.

Be aware, that these wires typically are very slim of 18 gauge or similar. They may not be appropriate for a 'good' setup, but will probably work just fine for years to come if that's what you want to use. Trace the wires back to where they came from and show us a picture of the other end of things.

yep, looks like some kind of proprietary connector that is only compatible with whatever system it was for. I'd guess it is patched into regular wire inside the wall.

Is that the only one hanging like that? You said obvious speakers before so are there other cables or speaker connectors on the wall suggesting s surround sound setup?
Is there a place where a bunch of wires are sticking out like a closet that would suggest a receiver location?
Do you have an Ohm/Volt meter? Troubleshoot.

If you all notice, these wires aren't run 'in' the wall. They are taped into the corner, then the corner was painted to match. There is nothing 'in-wall' about this cable run.

It should be possible to look at the floor and trace the cables across the floor to wherever they are.

The old owners will be bummed when they get to their new place and NONE of their speakers work because they left their proprietary connectors behind them.

Good eye, didn't look that close. That will make removal fun, eh?

I saw that tape but had a different idea why it was there.
My question for him still stands if that is the only wire like that or other locations that might correspond to a surround system.
