Just announced...
Netflix has announced that it is now distributing “studio quality” and adaptive audio streaming, bringing sound up to the company’s established video quality benchmark, largely in response to the demands of content creators.
They have updated the subject algorithms for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital +, Dolby Atmos...
Now Netflix has upgraded to 640 kbps, a 10:1 compression ratio when compared to a 24-bit 5.1 channel studio master. The improvement was delivered by using a bitrate ladder for 5.1-channel audio ranging from 192 up to 640 kbps. For Dolby Atmos bitrates, this was increased for the highest offering to 768 kbps. Netflix advised the audio upgrade was requested based upon subscriber feedback.

Netflix can increase the Atmos bitrate all they want. It does little good unless they do a better job mixing the sound into the overhead speakers, which seems to be extremely lacking IMO.

That’s a good question - comparing the same movie with different streaming services, which I have not done.

I’ve noticed when I stream an Atmos movie from Vudu or apple iTunes my Yamaha gets stuck in Straight mode. I’m starting to think It’s homophobic.

Not only did Netflix increase the bit rate of all audio streams from 192Kbps up to 640Kbps...
But also brought its adaptive video streaming process to audio streaming. That’s a machine learning algorithm that analyzes your connection to adapt video streaming in real time. The same will now happen with your audio experience. The better your internet connection, the better the sound...
Which basically means is that you’ll need an extra 10Mbps to handle the “high-quality audio.” In other words, you won’t need to upgrade your internet connection to get better sound on all Netflix shows, as long as U meet their minimum speed requirements... NetFlix further advised the sound is optimized for AV receivers, streaming boxes, speakers, and soundbars that can support Dolby 5.1, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital + and Dolby Atmos. If your equipment doesn’t meet those standards, then you won’t take advantage for the audio upgrade.

Thanks, that would make sense why I haven't noticed anything, with my low speed connection (less than 10Mbps in the first place).

Yup...
To me its good news...
Though not as good as having the disc, NetFlix fills a market need with its extensive library. If there is a specific selection that a user absolutely wants the best video & audio then go purchase the disc as virtually all streaming services will have some type of performance trade-off...
Yet, IMHO...
The convenience of NetFlix is still a great source of quality content...

I think (hope) we'll continue to see both the audio and video quality of streaming increase. As internet speeds increase (sorry @lovinthehd ) then we can take advantage of the better quality.

However, lots of services are stuck in stereo so we really have a long way to go before they replace discs, but it's not impossible.

Hey the wireless ISP with the better speeds may install that line of sight antenna I need for reception someday....maybe I'll call them again and see where that's at.... LOL

Yeah...
The internet speeds varies widely throughout the USA... @ my home office (town 50 miles outside of LA) I get an average of 250Mbps... And closer to downtown LA @ my regular office the latest fiber delivers 1Gbps but these services cost more $$.. Overall when I connect for streaming video and audio I have already made some concessions and don't expect for the quality to be the best... But still the technical progress/speeds over the last 5 years has been significantly improved... Especially compared to some of the early DSL stuff..

In major metro areas it's easy to do better....out in the boonies sometimes dsl is the only choice (and up to a little more than a year ago, the only choice here....the wireless ISP offers speeds of 60Mbps or so, some have reported up to 90 tho). Living here beats the heck out of living in a metro area, tho, so....especially socal (been there done that).

For our vacation house located 85 miles from LA, there is only DSL and even cell coverage is marginal.. But then again when we escape to there we don't want to have connections with the metro jungle stuff...

Exactly I'm retired in my vacation spot. Cell phones work in town, not very well in the forest here. You're out near Joshua Tree, do I remember that correctly?

Firstly...
U should check ur internet download speed @ the home theater system spot.

To be assured of a quality video & audio stream from NetFlix the download speed should be @ least 50Mbps... Once U are sure U have enough download speed, then select a later movie...

Does anyone know of any Ultra HD Blu-ray player that supports Netflix with Dolby Atmos? It appears Roku does not support Dolby Atmos on Netflix. and outside of Apple TV and Xbox which does, but I don't really want to purchase just to get Netflix with Atmos. I do need a Ultra HD Blu-ray player, do any support Dolby Atmos on Netflix?
