I recently bought a Sony STR-DN1080 receiver. I am having issues with full surround when watching apps on XBOX and Apple TV. The back surround speakers don’t have output no matter what I try. There seems to be output from back speakers when watching Directv. I’m hoping to get use out of the full 7.1.

I have a cobbled speaker setup.
Here is what I have:

TV: Sony XBR-65X850E
Receiver: Sony STR-DN1080
Center speaker: Onkyo SKC-8230
Front left and right speakers: Onix X-LS
Surround left and right speakers: NHT SZX-011049
Surround back left and right speakers: Onyko 8230
Subwoofer: Onkyo
Two other speakers in another part of basement which I just want to know how to output at certain times for music.

The following are running HDMI through the receiver:

Directv
Xbox one
Apple TV
Wii

HDMI out of receiver to TV.
Optical audio connecting TV and receiver.

What is my optimal setup of connections and configurations on all devices? Specially sound from XBOX One (HBO, Showtime).

I appreciate any help!

Make sure the components in question are set in their menus to output Dolby Digital.

When the DN1080 receives a DD signal, it should show 5.1 on its display. That would (of course) mean the source component is sending a DD 5.1 signal.

At that point, if you don’t get DD, it simply means the program’s audio wasn’t produced with DD.

If the source doesn't provide a 7 channel signal, your back surround speakers should not produce any sound, unless your receiver can be set to send output to back surround speakers, even with a source signal with less audio channels.
