Surround Speaker Placement

I recently purchased the new B&W 603's and the HTM6 center speaker. Now I need to add my surround speakers. My ceilings are vaulted and I have no room on the back wall to mount the speakers due to the open floor plan of my living room. I've thought about mounting on opposite walls but that would put one speaker at about 8ft distance and the other at 12ft. The other option is to stand mount but I would have to set at each end of the couch and was afraid this would be too close to the listening area. The only other option I've come up with is ceiling speakers? I kind of wanted to add the 606's to keep in the same family but looking for some much needed advice.

Surround speakers are supposed to be to the side or side and slightly back. Something like 90 to 110 degrees is in the dolby guidlines. A bit of distance mismach probably wont do much as it will be compensated for in the AVR by the auto setup with timing delays and volume. You never really know anyway until you try in your room with own equipment but it should work fine, better then ceiling or directly behind anyway.

What he said. Side walls or ends of the couch. Try both if you can and make sure you run room correction or make the proper adjustments in the AVR.

In ceilings are difficult to get sounding right in a vaulted ceiling. If you decide to put Atmos speakers up there, put them slightly farther out from center than you normall would.

Enjoy the B&W’s. New 600 series in nice. Also, since you’re only doing 5.1, don’t forget you can probably reassign rear channels to bi-amp the front!

Thanks Leemix. I went to a Magnolia store and compared the B&W to Def Tech and Martin Logan. To me there was no comparison the B&W sounded so much better. I was surprised. The 702's sounded even better but not enough for me to justify the price difference.
