Much in the same way that car enthusiasts regarded the Fiero as a really poor example of a mid engine sports car.
It didn't stop some people from adding racing stripes, iridescent paint and thinking they were great.
This is why taste and preference mean so very little when compared to measures of performance..
But, but, but, it had the dah, dah DAHHHHH- Iron Duke engine!
I worked with a guy who bought a Fiero and another friend had a Mazda RX-7. The guy with the Fiero called the RX-7 a 'Plastic Porsche'. He didn't know the RX had a metal body, or that his Fiero didn't.
The Fiero moved like a stove, the RX-7 hauled ass after the original engine & transmission were replaced with the 1.3L rotary, lightweight flywheel added, suspension lowered/re-sprung and spoiler & air dam installed.
WRT stripes, etc- I heard a comment about cars that probably came from the '50s- "If it don't go, chrome it".
