Hi everyone thanks for your comments.

Would the next recommenced step be to buy a new amplifier with a built in pre amp then?

It appears rather than a power amp you have what is called an integrated amp (a combination of pre-amp and amp). You have several inputs on that device (three) so use two of them for your turntable and echo. If you want to have them amplified simultaneously to your speakers you'll need to add a mixer. What speakers are you using?

The problem is that his turntable does not have a preamp out. The RCA plugs on the back are for direct connection to speakers. They are connected to those 1.5 watt power amps in the turntable. I have never seen or heard of a contraption like that before.

Yeah I already noted earlier in the thread about the phono stage....but he hasn't noticed the difference or maybe it even has one somehow what with the outputs for speakers. I assume he's got speakers attahed to the amp also but at this point who knows :)

Sorry yes I should have clarified I do have speakers attached to my amplifier! I don’t know the brand of my speakers but they’re Mission standmount speakers connected through cable wire.

Connecting two sources with a Y cable into an amp is not entirely safe. Sure the chance of something breaking right away isnt great, but better safe then sorry, especially since its unlikly to work well without a mixer or something similar

You need to consider the current involved and in this case, it's not significant. You also need to consider the design, but if you look at the link, and I asked if it is the same one used by the OP, it has an Aux In jack, so it may not be a problem- I never posted anything about using Y cords.

". I’m looking to plug both my Amazon Echo and my turntable into the same amplifier channel via a Y cable. Ideally I’d like to have both the turntable and the Echo working at the same time on the same channel (i.e. ask the Echo whilst listening to a record). Is this possible? What would be a better way to achieve what I want? "

Altho maybe I just assumed he'd be asking the Echo to play something....
I go blind a lot. Not totally, just partially- I think I missed the part about the Y cord, or ignored it after seeing this turntable in the link I provided, with an Aux In jack.

You didnt mention a Y cord i know but the OP did and even though the current is very small that can be all it takes for some equipment to fail immediatly or after a while.

Definitely not recommended, but it can also cause the audio to stop because the output from one channel in some equipment is inverted.
