looking at an Outlaw RR2150 receiver that has been "refurbished" by Outlaw. i know that term can mean many things, from repair of catastrophic failure to a simple return after the 30 day trial.
thoughts?

If they give you a full warranty, shouldn't be a concern. There are many discussions here about similar concerns, but ultimately, if you have the ability to check it out, and can get it serviced if it doesn't work right... no worries. If its more limited than that, how much is the savings compared to the piece of mind of buying new?

Like you suspected, you are taking a chance. As already mentioned, is the price difference worth taking a chance?

It's different for everyone.

For me, I would never buy any complex components (AVR, AVP, etc.) Refurbished.

I would buy new and stick to buying the previous year models on sale from 1) Yamaha or 2) Sony ES. Denon/Marantz would be my 3rd choice.

Buy refurbished is a Gamble no matter how you look at it. But it also can have a big payoff to. Now I'm in the camp of, if getting a new unit over a refurbished say at 900.00 plus as opposed to new with a 200 plus up taking? New wins out

Or if you can get a new AVR for 40-50% off!

Why buy refurbished if you can get big discounts on a new one, right?

But if you buy refurb, then buy Yamaha since they are #1 in reliability.

If it’s a $2000 component new but you can get a refurb for $1700-$1800, I’d just buy new. In the case of my RX-A3080 which was $2200 new at the time, I got it for $1400 refurbished.

How many speakers are you running on your Yammy? Any external amp? I’m about to go from 5.1 to 5.1.4 on my 2060.

For now it’s 5.2. I gave up the surround backs for use in Zone 2 in my wife’s craft room. I plan on going 5.2.4. When I do that I’ll be pulling the LCRs off the AVR and adding an amp, probably the Outlaw 5000.

When I ran Zone 2 from the main system I wasn’t thinking about 5.2.4. If I had I would have run my wife’s craft room off the second system. That one will always be 5.1 or 5.2.

I have no doubt both the 3070 and 3080 can run 5.x.4 without an external amp. The question because how well can they do it? At reasonable volumes they’d be just fine. Not a bad way to go. I typically like to fill a gap before improving upon something that’s already functional. If you have another room in need of good sound and have the speakers to do it, picking up a 3070 for 5.2.4 will fill both needs. If you listen at low or moderate levels you might not ever need an amp.

At least that gamble is mitigated a little, but you are correct. It took me several service tickets with d&m cs, and being without my avr for close to 3 of the first 6 mos I owned it. All better now after they replaced the digital board.

I’ve had trouble with NEW RX A3080 since day 1. Have a new Denon x4400h, no trouble....yet!

Added; just wanted to add that AI thing sounds like a loudness button to me. Haven’t heard anyone say anything about it.

Yeah, power ratings looks similar to me. The amp lists some specs that the AVR doesn’t but I’d assume the amp has a more robust power supply, bigger caps, etc.
