So i have a Denon AVR-X4400H. I have a 5.2.4 setup that has 4 dolby atmos speakers. When i am not listening to a movie that doesn't have dolby atmos, which mode should i be listening too? DTS-HD + Dolby Surround or
DTS-HD + Neural X

Which ever sounds the best to you. FWIW I tend to keep content in its orginal format, but with object based audio setups seems most like to use those speakers all the time.

It seems to me that it depends on the source. Some people set it and forget it, but to get the most of either one you’ll have to spend some time experimenting. Of course that’s the fun part. FWIW, dts-nueralX seems to use the height channels a little more aggressively while DSU(Dolby surround) seems to be a little more natural. I believe there are times when on or the other can struggle with what to put up there too. For example dialogue might get unnaturally placed above. Just have to play I guess!

Totally agree with all the advice that's my reciever and I really like it I have a 7.2.4 set up I usually let it select the mode itself it automatically does that but if I don't like what I'm hearing I play around with the settings and have some fun experimenting

It depends on the source for sure.

Sometimes NeuralX sounds better when watching DTS movies, sometimes DSU sounds better.

Sometimes they sound about the same.

But for me in general, when I watch DTS movies, I use DTS NeuralX.

When I watch Dolby movies, I use DSU.

When I watch PCM (not DTS, not DD), I use DSU. But I think for PCM, NeuralX and DSU sound about the same most of the time.
