Need help choosing a receiver in the $300 - $500 range. I have Polk monitor 90's and a cs2 for fronts, and monitor 40's for surrounds. needs to be 4k and at least 7.2 the features and specs on the 2017 and 2018 models seem very similar, but don't want to get caught by the old tech. blues. Ive been looking at these refurbished at Accessories 4 Less
Onkyo tx-nr777, tx-nr686, tx-rz720, tx-rz630
Denon avr-s740, avr-s940, avr-x2400, avr-x3400, avr-x2500
do any of these stand out or is there something else you would sugges

I would always buy brand new. I would never buy refurbished.

But if I were to take a chance on refurbished, I would probably get Yamaha since they are ranked #1 in reliability.

I would never buy Onkyo since I think they might have the worst reliability.

Like BoredSysAdmin says, buy LIKE-NEW or at least VERY GOOD conditions from Amazon (Warehouse).

I've bought AVR from Amazon Warehouse.

If you really need to save the money refurbs can be fine as long as you don't mind the risk and terms/warranty. The Denon 3400 has pre-outs and XT32 so for that reason alone I'd take it over all the other Denons you listed. Not ready to recommend Onkyo myself.

Thanks Ill look at that. I saw that accessories 4 less suggested on here, and sell only new or mfg refurbished with warranty. Never had any problem with Amazon tho. Just confusing picking one out when they all seem about the same

A4L sells mostly refurb avrs, very rarely a new unit from the times I've checked the last few years. One year warranty on a refurb, tho your credit card can possibly extend that by another year for free (check your card terms).

If your on a tight budget look into the Sony STRDN1080. It has 7.2 channels and has 4K compatibility. It’s actually on sale at Best Buy for only $449.99 compared to its original price of $599.99.
I have the older model Sony STRDN1070 and I’ve been using it for the last 3 years without any issues. I have mine setup in full 7.2 with a projector and running Klipsch speakers. It’s worked flawlessly every single night, absolutely no issues.
Only down side is no pre outs, but if your on a budget I don’t think you would want to spend the extra money for an amplifier.

Among the listed, I would be more confident with the AVR-X3400H for reasons @lovinthehd cited and I can assure you that it will sound as good as a lot of high end preamp/amps if used well below it's output power limit.

I would also agree with others that Amazon may be a better source because of it's return policy, assuming shipping is free (never bought/return a heavy item so not 100% sure).

The 3400 I see is available as a prime purchase, so yes, shipping is free and would be delivered by Tuesday if I order within 4 hours. I've heard reports of Amazon telling people to keep subs when they wanted to return them but doubt the avr would generate that....pretty sure they'd handle return shipping at least as a prime purchase.

The TSR-7850 7.2Ch seems to have similar spec as the RX-V683 (7.2Ch, 235W x 2Ch into 2 ohms Dynamic Power), which is on sale for $350 on Amazon.

That's pretty close but the TSR-7850 is closer to the RX-A780 which is $650 on Amazon.

My A770 was $399 a few months ago new on Amazon. I use it for 2.1 in my bedroom.

I think a TSR-7850 would be like a RXV-785. Just drop the zero, in other words. However, two years ago they had a RX-V781, but this year there is no RX-V785....
