When tv is off no sound. HELP

Hi there - my setup is a 40’ fiber optic HDMI from my Yamaha a2070 to my TV. All inputs are HDMI into the receiver.

I want to be able to do what I used to be able to do with my previous Onkyo: Switch to the receiver input for cable TV and then turn the tv off - I would have the sound of the cable tv channel with the TV switched off. Perfect.

However, now when I do the above, I have sound for about 30 seconds after the tv is switched off, then HDMI out flashes on the front of the Yamaha, and sound disappears. I’m assuming the entire signal disappears, but the tv is off anyway.

Any idea how to maintain the signal from the receiver to the speakers if just the tv is off?

Update: it’s SOMETHING to do with fiber HDMI...probably being unidirectional or something. I have the display end in the TV and source end in the receiver! I have tried three fiber hdmi cables, all different brands, and still have this issue.

I connected my old copper core HDMI cable and sound was uninterrupted when I switched off the tv. Perfect...except it can’t handle the video signal from the new receiver...which is why I upgraded to fiber.

Does any of this make sense to anyone? Is there a way to overcome this?

Thank you

Update two:
To overcome no sound/intermittent sound with fiber hdmi attached:
- used copper core HDMI and no issues other than bandwidth (which is why I bought fiber in the first place
- tried 2 additional fiber hdmi by different manufacturers
- tried different inputs. Xfinity simply no sound. Apple TV would play audio but RED HDMI OUT light would flash on front of receiver and then sound would cut out for about 3 seconds until the RED HDMI light turned off. That repeated itself every 20 seconds or so.

So wtf?

Not sure if this is the same issue but I did encounter video and sound flashing off and on on my Yamaha when I tried to use older hdmi 1.3b cables on my 2060.

For 4K hdmi, you need to be in hdmi mode 1 and use hdmi 2.0 certified hdmi cables. (Yamaha defaults to mode 2 so you need to change it to mode 1 in advanced settings)

I use the Monoprice hdmi 2.0 cables. They are good and don’t cost much.
