I have watched a few dolby atmos movies and I have a 5.1.4 setup right now. There is hardly any sound coming from the dolby atmos speakers. Is this because dolby atmos isn't developed properly yet? Would I be better off doing a 7.1.2 setup? Thanks for your time guys!

There's not much beyond ambient information, what did you expect, the same volume as your mains?

Well the front surround speakers are putting out way more sound than the front and rear dolby atmos speakers. I could do front and rear surround speakers and front dolby atmos speakers.

Check to make sure they are level matched with a spl meter.

When/If you did a room EQ sweep...was the signal from the atmos speakers much lower than the other speakers during the test sounds?

If the signal was the same volume or similar...it could be the movie content just doesn't call for much from the atmos surrounds. So...what movie did you watch?

If the signal is much lower during the test, you might be able to increase the dB of the atmos speakers...I can manipulate each speaker's volume manually so I assume you can might be able to as well.

To answer your question on 7.1.2 in lieu of...maybe. If the room configuration allows for enough depth behind the main listening position...the rear speakers will be effective in a 7.1 system. Otherwise scrap the 7.1.2 idea.

At the same time I feel 4 atmos speakers are better than 2.

Depends on the movies.

We have the Atmos/DTSX discussion thread where we give our impressions of these movies.

https://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/the-dolby-atmos-dts-x-and-auro-3d-discussion-thread.112480/

The Matrix Trilogy, Gravity, Oblivion, The Equalizer 2014, Daredevil Season 3, The Great Wall, Underworld Blood Wars, Hacksaw Ridge, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Twilight 2008, and Mission Impossible Fallout should have plenty of Overhead Atmos speakers sound effects.

You may just need to boost the ceiling speaker levels a few decibels. When all the other speakers and subwoofers are firing away, they may make it difficult to hear the smaller ceiling speakers.

I haven't seen Wonder Woman to know how much overhead signal they have in this movie, but I have seen a couple from the list that Audio RX has posted....Gravity I can vouch for having some good overhead sound.

First, see if you can manually increase the SPL on the ceiling speakers and see if that helps...I have 8" inceiling speakers with a 9' ceiling and post audyssey, they're bumped +3dB I think.

Maybe it was just the movie. I had already increased the SPL on the dolby atmos speakers. The surround speakers were a lot louder than the atmos speakers. And I didn't change the surround speakers level at all.

Seriously, I have no life.
If the system is properly level matched, then the faint Atmos sound is the fault of the program.

Thanks mtrycrafts! That's what I was thinking. I have a denon with audyssey that does the 8 different measurements.
