thanks for your help, as you can tell iam new at the high end equipment..i wanted to start somewhere.. I know most do not like the 1980 at15" and as soon as I can find a pair of speakers that can make that low end bass I like at times, I will get them...wanting to not have to use powered subs

There are speakers that fit your listening style that are well designed. I'm sure its hard coming from towers that had big bass drivers to look at other options. Depending on your needs for SPL smaller towers and bookshelves can be quite potent using subs. If your gonna drop 1k on a used mac preamp, consider looking at speakers from JTR and Seaton before hand. We just unpacked new speakers yesterday and they will be driven by a $599 denon avr and a $800 QSC pro amp. Aside from the cool factor of mac, it's the speakers that make the difference in the end. I've owned many pieces of esoteric gear thru the years and was always pleased, just dont need the "look" to achieve great sound. It's a fun hobby, enjoy!

thanks I agree...my Kenwood set up I have and those speakers can be heard three doors down and across the street. Lol I tend to go deaf the more u drink.

ok so when i got home this eve.i set the switch to the .75 and the gains about 3/4 up.. and slowly turned it up..sounding good at about the 175watt on the meters the power guard light on the left side was coming on and off a little until i turned it down some...my old amp is a 135 wpc i think and seems alot louder...thoughts

A watt is a watt. The speakers are the same so probably just a perception. Are you using the hold function ti determine the loudest peak?

no i didnt....i was just thinking before the pg started working it could go louder speakers sounder good though. i didnt push it... i wanted to ask you how you liked yours...for having it so long

It served me well throughout the years. Got tired of replacing the glass every 4 or 5 years from handling, kids and animals. You should get very loud with less than 10w based n your stated spl habits. Its fairly bulletproof with most any load.

so I switched it back to the 2.5 in stead of .75 it is louder and not hitting the pg like before.... Will it hurt anything using that setting... Is that because the sensitivity level is higher than what the spec sheet listed ..wish I wasn't so new....

When you were setting sensitivity to .75V did you try gain at less than 3/4? What is "pg"?

pg is the amps power guard
.i did try with the gains at 3/4... My receiver had to be turned up all the way...then turned up the gains.. Went to 175watts on the meters it was bumping the red power guard lights

with it set at 2.5 it will go louder without bumping the power guard and the receiver gets it to that loud about half way up

just curious why and if it will hurt anything....i started out thinking at 135 watts it was loud, then at more watts it you be louder...well I purchased a new crown amp it was 475 watts at 4 ohms wow speaker never sounded better...then I sent it back, because I thought in my mind it was a throw away amp if it ever needed worked on, so I decided to get a amp that would be almost twice the watts as my old amp and would be worth working on if need be...so hear we are. lol any thoughts?
