Question for the experts - Sony, 5.1 & 5.2

Hello,
I have a Sony hbd-dz175 that we purchased in 2012, with speakers set up (completely ran through the walls etc..). Recently the receiver gave me an error (push power protector) that I tried to troubleshoot through Sony’s support, videos and forums and seems like it just met its fate and I honestly have given up. I am wanting to replace it now but not sure if I can use a 5.2 system? I understand that the difference between 5.1 and 5.2 has to do with the subwoofer but with the speakers already setup and wired, mainly just want to replace the receiver.
Any recommendations? Do I have to match the 5.1 technology?
Speakers originally came with the system.
Thank you in advance for the advice

Whichever 5.2 receiver you are considering, just find its user manual online and read it to find out if it has a setting to accommodate 1 subwoofer instead of 2. I am confident that it will, but that's the easiest way to know for certain.

Did you have a specific receiver in mind?

Not sure if I understand the question.

You have a Sony AVR that you want to replace but not sure if you can use a 5.2 system?

A lot of recent AVRs will allow you to use 2 subs via a Sub 1, and Sub 2 RCA cable connection. If you don't have the wiring or need for 2 subs (5.2) then you wire for 1 sub...no need to try and find a 5.1 AVR.

The .2 only means it has an internal splitter instead of an external one. In the D/M receivers with higher levels of Audyssey, it will manage 2 subs separately, but will also easily accommodate one.

Thank you all, the redundant subwoofer seems to be my concern, I only have one. This is the receiver that I would like to buy:
Sony - 725W 5.2-Ch. Hi-Res 4K Ultra HD A/V Home Theater Receiver - Black

i just skimmed the owner's manual:

"If you have one subwoofer, connect it to either of the SUBWOOFER OUT jacks. If you have two subwoofers,
you can connect them to both SUBWOOFER OUT jacks"

You'll be fine.

What is the actual product you have? I'm having a hard time finding a manual for what you listed as your purchase. There is a bunch of info on the DAV-DZ175, but not the HBD-DZ175 that you listed.

https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/res/manuals/4165/41654831M.pdf

It concerns me that you may have an all-in-one system without a powered sub and speakers which are not entirely compatible with most standard systems.

If this is the same thing...

Then your subwoofer is non-industry standard and it won't connect to any standard A/V receiver from any company because it is a non-powered sub.

Your other speakers would need the proprietary Sony ends cut off and then connected to the industry standard speaker outputs of a new standard A/V receiver.

The speakers are all 2 5/8" size rated at 3 ohms. Which is lower than most receivers typically driving, but shouldn't be an issue at lower volume.

You can see on the back of the receiver that you linked to that it recommends speakers between 6 and 16 ohms, so the 3 ohm speakers could present an issue.

It would be better to get something like this for a bit more money...

Replace the speakers and the subwoofer. You can't use the subwoofer cable if that was run in the wall because that is NOT industry standard, but you can put it near the receiver. The rest of the cables you can cut and splice in the new speakers just fine, though if you used the stock Sony cables they are undersized and are likely of improper gauge for the distance in use. But, that's what it is.
