What to do with current setup

I was recently given a Sony str dg510 receiver with two Klipsch f-30 floor standing speakers and the matching center channel. No subwoofer currently. No other speakers. Hooked up to an old nec m260x projector.

I plan to get a 4k tv in the next year. I would eventually like a 5.1 surround system. I like listening to music and watching movies on Netflix and Amazon. The equipment is in the basement, roughlyn 13x20'

Is the receiver adequate for these speakers?
Are the speakers worth keeping?
Do I need matching speakers and sub?

I want to slowly upgrade as I have the money. I currently have around $600 for the next step. But I can come up with more. I am located in the U.S.

I greatly appreciate any input!

1. yes
2. at your limited budget, unless broken, keep them
3. No
Since your sony being a very budget model and 10 years old, best you could hope for is a TV which will process all the sound and provide audio out in 5.1 [likely spd/if digital audio port]
Besides TV, at your budget, I'd get this sub:

get a pair of cheap bookshelves for surrounds. My suggestion is craigslist and a $50 budget.
The rest - keep it and buy a bigger tv :)

Cool. So after I get new TV, sub, and cheap bookshelf speakers, would receiver be the next upgrade? And would a receiver ($500-700) make the speakers sound any better at that point?

I just noticed that there is a guy in my neighborhood selling a Denon AVR X1400h for $200.

Is that worth buying?

He won't budge on the price on the receiver
you could buy it on Amazon "like new" - it's basically a new/open box with 3 years Denon warranty for $250
Buying it 2nd hand/no warranty for $200 or even $150 doesn't make sense to me.

What about onkyo tx nr686 for $329?www(dot)accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/onktxnr686/onkyo-tx-nr686-7.2-ch-x-100-watts-networking-a/v-receiver/1.html

What do you like better about the Denon? I'm new to all this, but on paper that onkyo seems a little better

There is no perfect receiver -- both receivers have good power handling -- I prefer Onkyo's higher end Integra line -- Onkyo had some major quality control problems in the past, however they seem to be more in line now -- not to say that Denon has been perfect. .... they both have a 1 year warranty

But I would keep some Amazon options open for a receiver -- which can have better warranty

Your option and your call

Thanks! I may just end up going with the avr x1400h from amazon. I already bought the dayton sub 1200, and a TCL 5 series tv.

I have older Onkyo which still used Audessey room auto calibration, new ones use some new proprietary system which has yet to proven itself. I strongly suggest that open Denon x1400 open box for $250 is probably one of better deal you'd find. Keep in mind that any refub product would carry only 1 year warranty.

No doubt he wants the $200 to put towards another better Denon with more Atmos channel outputs :D.

Hey lay low on it these AVR's ain't gonna grow legs and runway. By next year they'll have another Denon claiming to the bells and whistles flagship with few other models in the budget range of $1 grand or under while the others are $1 grand + to $2 grand.

Oh and plus some of the newer ones won't be able to use dts neural:X with Dolby Atmos as Dolby labs is getting funny about other surround brands being used with theirs.

Get one of the current models of last year or early this year some now at cheap lower prices as they they'll have new model out soon.

Get an AVR that has pre-outputs so you can add on external outboard pro audio like DSP crossover if you so desire to do that?

Keep eye on ebay amazon and elsewhere for bargains.
