I new to the home theater scene. I'm looking to purchase a home theater/surround sound. I have a bout $1000 to spend. Is the Bose Acoustimass 10 series a good buy?

Do you need everything? Receiver, sub, speakers?

I would steer clear of Bose Acoustimass. For my money, I would go for a Dayton Audio MK442 front stage set, using the MK442 as all three front stage speakers (review here). For the surrounds, get some Dayton B452-Air speakers (review here) or, if you can handle something larger, the Monoprice ribbon speakers (review here). For the receiver, I would look at what can be had from Denon, Marantz, Sony, or Yamaha in the $400 range. For the sub, I might get a couple of these, these, or these. I would stick with Monoprice or Part-Express for things like mounts, cables, and accessories. That will get you and very nice surround sound setup for less than $1k.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'm looking for quality speakers but small if possible. What don't you like about the Bose Acoustimasss?

Well, they aren't very high-fidelity speakers. They will probably be better than TV speakers, but that isn't saying much. They are badly over-priced considering the components that are used. If you need small, look at the Dayton MK402, those aren't very big. The treble on them is a bit hot though, but at least they will have treble unlike the Bose speakers.

The problem is it is hard to get a good, full sound from small speakers.

Yes, I could probably go to $1200. But that's it.

Nothing crazy. I really just need them for movies and sports with a surround sound feel.

Everything?
Yeah pretty much this.
Unfortunately their marketing is better than their engineering. The crazy thing is people who own them must’ve listened with their eyeballs, and not their ears when checking them out in the store.

The small speaker systems are probably best suited for SMALL rooms, like a small bedroom, dorm room, etc, not a home theatre system. Just my 2 cents worth.
