I have a Denon x4400 and a new AppleTV 4K. The audio from the AppleTV is set to output as Atmos, but Whenever I watch a movie from iTunes, I only get “Multi-channel In” as my audio option. I should at least be getting Dolby Digital on everything (yes, I’ve checked and the movies I’ve rented are all DD capable). Any suggestions? Cable should be fine as well - new monoprice premium high speed hdmi

Curious why you think multi-ch in leaves out the metadata for Atmos? Don't know, just wonder if there's a difference. Assume your avr is fully setup for Atmos otherwise...

I have Apple 4K TV but with a Yamaha AVR. I haven’t tried other apps but Netflix has some select Atmos titles. (They will show Atmos next to the title) You have to have the UHD Netflix subscription and the Apple 4K updated to the latest software. The ATV audio settings needs to say enabled for Atmos.

On a 2016 Yamaha Atmos AVR, I had to enable at least 2 overhead speakers and select “enable object decoding”. My hdmi cable is a new monoprice cable certified for HDMI 2.0A.

YMMV. Good Luck! :)

Make sure both your ATV4K and Denon AVR have the most recent firmware.

Also, in your Apple TV 4K, go to Settings > Video and Audio and select Audio Format. Under Atmospheric Audio, verify that Dolby Atmos is on.

If you have the latest ATV4K firmware (tvOS 12) then it'll provide Atmos soundtracks on PCM using Dolby's MAT v2 encoding. If the receiver's Info display shows "Multi channel" and not Atmos, that means that it's receiving the PCM audio but is not receiving the Atmos metadata.

The firmware is updated on everything and the setting above is correct. I'm not even getting Dolby Digital on the APpleTV - it just always defaults to "Multi-Ch In." How do I fix it so it gets the appropriate metadata?

Which app? The Netflix one?

Tried multiple apps - iTunes movies, Netflix, HBO, Starz. Same thing happens no matter what I use

Think only Netflix on select movies or iTunes on select movies can do Atmos. None of the other apps will. (At least for now)

I'd be fine dealing without Atmos, but I don't even get Dolby Digital right now - everything goes to "Multi Channel In" so I don't think it's processing any of the correct audio signal processing.

So on my Yamaha most shows are 2.0 PCM and some are 5.1 PCM and a few titles on Netflix are Atmos using Dolby Digital Plus with Metadata and the Yamaha sees these as Atmos. I only have 5.1.4 so unsure if they are 7.1.4. My 4 ceiling speakers are not in the ceiling yet but I had them hooked up a week ago to test Atmos. I need to do the real install in my attic soon.

Almost all of my iTunes movies are at least DD. Not sure about Netflix but HBO broadcasts in DD so I should be getting a Dolby signal instead of the other

I’ll have to download the HBO Now app on Apple and see what my Yamaha sees. (I usually watch HBO thru Comcast cable on TiVo Roamio DVR).

Edit: Comcast doesn’t support HBO Go and I don’t have HBO thru Direct TV Now. And I’m not paying $15/mo for HBO Now since I have HBO thru Comcast. Sorry

As far as the Netflix App goes on Apple 4KTV, I can confirm I get UHD Atmos 5.1.4 and 5.1 if I turn off ceiling speakers from Outlaw King.

What happens when you pick that Netflix title?

As far as Amazon Prime, I do get Atmos 5.1.4 and 5.1 if I turn off ceiling speakers for the UHD Jack Ryan.

What do you get for UHD Jack Ryan?

Ok, this is is weird. Did some other research and found a thread suggesting that if you turn off HDMI controls/CEC in the receiver, the problem disappears. I did that and voila! DD and Atmos all fine. The Denon still reads “Multi Ch In + DD” now, which is a little strange, but that same thread said that’s because the AppleTV is doing the sound processing and passing that signal to the AVR rather than allowing the Denon to do it. If the source material is in Atmos, the Denon does say “Dolby Atmos.” I have no idea why any of this would be true but it seems to work
