Interestingly enough, Sony has not made separates for almost 20 years. They only produce today what there's a mass market for. That's to say, seems the preamp/power amp market is relatively small. Maybe, the benefits of separates is lost in today's market. This certainly makes separates less affordable. I often wonder if my Sony TA-E9000ES goes south, what I'd buy to replace it. What I've seen out there so far, which is compelling, I can not afford.

Buying separates includes two power supplies, which are an expensive part of each piece. Two chassis, additional jacks, etc add to the price along with the previously mentioned difference in economy of scale.

Yeah, these brands I'd call affordable. Maybe the pre-pros from Marantz, Yamaha but amps from elsewhere for value (Monoliths from Monoprice for example in addition to what Outlaw/Emotiva offer).

Yeah, I hear you. I've read about the new Sony ES AVR's. They seem like a good value. Hope they have a new pre/pro out when mine gives up.

driven by what, driving what ?? regardless that was a previous century. So be it, do you think everything that Nelson Pass has designed in the past 30 plus years sounds the same ? I go back to his Threshold days in the eighties with fond memories of his S300 driving my Maggies of the time.

I have no regrets purchasing and using his products, besides it's pretty safe to say he's forgotten more about amplifier design than you, me or anyone else on here !
