Hey guys really weird situation here.
Bought the 4400H installed atmos speakers been dialing in the sound everything has been going fine then tonight when I go to watch a movie for the first time something really weird happens
My gear is 2 crown xls 1002 amplifiers for the front 3 channels. An Emotiva UPA-7 running my heights. The denon is running my surrounds. Here in a sec I'll post pics in case I've done something wrong setting up my gear.
So I go to start the movie Annihilation. It has atmos so I go to turn the sound selector on the Denon remote to Dolby Surround. And I get the weirdest sound from my front 3 speakers. The ones that are being run by the crowns.
It's a distorted sound a cracking like when you have a bad rca and connection. The Crowns do put out that tweeter hum I've been told that's common and it sounds like this but it's more screechy and distorted.
First time it's happened and so I turn everything off unplug everything and then go and check all my connections rca looks good speakers wires good red and black connected properly check to see nothing back there is messed up.
Turn the reciever back on no noise great then I notice it only comes on when I put on Dolby Surround any other format no issues no noise whatsoever. DTS fine stereo fine auto 2d fine Dolby? I get the weird distortion. This is on every disc I put in not just Annihilation. So its not the discs. I try turning off the Emotiva turning off and on the crowns maybe they're interfering with each other. Doesn't seem to matter
This is weird and I don't know what is causing the issue. I have some ideas to proceed but I'm in over my head. I could use some steps to move forward with I don't want to hurt my speakers or do something else trying to fix a problem I'm not sure what it is or what to do. Any help really would be appreciated you all. Thank you.

One thing coming to mind grasping at straws yesterday I moved the racks over closer by the PB 4000's. Just so if I needed to slip back there I could get behind the center tower easier. Maybe those class D amps are to close to the sub now? I've heard they have monster magnets in them. But then again it would be affecting everything not just one sound format. Grasping at straws here gentleman

Seems like Dolby wouldn’t need to be selected at the AVR and Atmos will light up right away but maybe you meant the Blu-ray player chooses something other than Atmos? What player is it?

Is your firmware up to date, I seem to remember one version, somewhere around July, might have caused the problem but not sure if that applied to the 4400.

It's the Sony 2017 model I picked it up when all those Oppos got snatched. When I push the green button the Denon remote that let's you scroll down the screen menu and pick Dolby Surround Atmos DTS etc if I click the remote onto Dolby the distortion comes from the speakers But every other format no distortion

After I hooked everything up it said it was but that's a good option maybe a factory reboot and firmware update I'll do that right now. That's kind off what I'm looking for is some directions to take from you guys on how to proceed. I'll start with your suggestion right now I won't reboot but I'll update the firmware see if that helps

Couldn’t say without hearing it, but you wouldn’t select Dolby Surround for an Atmos track. DS is their upmixer just like dts nueral X. You would select that for legacy disks without an Atmos track. Maybe that’s part of your deal? If it allows you to choose “Dolby surround” you may have NOT selected the Atmos track in the disk menu. The display should say Dolby Atmos, not Dolby Surround. Sometimes they default to the Atmos track and sometimes they don’t. I ALWAYS check the disk menu every single time I watch a movie, just to make sure I’m getting the track I want.

X800 or X700 or something else? Did the Denon Atmos logo light up on the Denon?

Agree the logo for atmos should just light up if it is like my Yamaha.

The Sony lets you switch audio on the fly from the remote. It’s pretty cool. :)

Ok the atmos logo did not light up when I hit the green button on the atmos remote I noticed it wasn't even an option let me check the Sony player.

My PS3 lets me do that too. Problem is, it doesn’t say the track type, only if it’s track 1,2,3 etc. Sony screwed the pooch by not including a uhd reader imo. It’s mind bogglingly stupid.

Make sure it’s set to bitstream and double check the disk menu and make sure to select the right track.

Hmm my approach would be to isolate by running the emotiva only for bed channels for a minute to see if the issue goes away and is with the crowns or not.

I turned everything off and turned it on right now it's on Dolby there is no distortion I'm going to use the Denon remote to switch to DTS and then back and I'll bet the distortion will be there that's how it kicked in last time

I agree. This would help eliminate variables. I’m still a little curious about the soundtrack selection though. I’ve seen goofy things like this with decoding, but iirc it was PC related. I could be completely wrong here though...
