Hi,

What options need to be selected to do this upmixing? I can see some sound comming from surrounds but not sure if I havent missed something.

Thanks,
Andrei.

I like using the Dolby Surround upmixer. It fills the room nicely with sound. It seems to send any natural ambience or reverb in the recording to the surrounds. The info sent to the surround speakers varies depending on the source. Sometimes there is not much being sent to them at all.

So, do you just select dolby surr decoder as dsp mode? Anyhing else?

Nothing else - Surround Decoder, thats it. No "Hall in Vienna" "Hall in Amsterdam" or any other of that gimmicky reverb nonsense. I also use "Straight" or "Pure Direct" sometimes, but there is no sub with Pure Direct, so I don't use that one much.

Thank you. I just expected more magic from this upmixing to be honest

Keep in mind Surround Decoder doesn't add anything to the recording, it just extracts the natural ambiance and sends it to the surrounds. The main focus is on the front sound stage - Where it should be IMO.

I don't use it all but if you wanted more juice to the surrounds you could try 9 channel stereo. That way, all speakers get the same signal.

I use multi channel stereo quite a lot, when i want this sound bubble. But i thought upmixer will use some AI to send some instruments to one channel and others to another? Too much?

Did you try setting to dsu and enable center spread? Only use spread for music, disable for movies etc.

What is exact setting name for dsu? It is an AVR setting, not source?

Surround is the setting. However there is a choice of dts neural or dts neo or Dolby DSU in the menu. Then a sub choice under Dolby upmixer in same menu for center spread. The manual is downloadable as pdf for all Yamaha models on the Yamaha USA website

I have A2060, A770, and V681.

How would an avr be able to isolate each instrument? That would be too much :)

Based on typical frequences for instance)) maybe not exactly instruments, but some freqs from left, some from right. Sort of illusion of sound distribution in the space

They can do some of that but not so specifically as I read into your post before....

So in Gene’s YouTube he said the full 7.2.4 with DSU (center spread enabled) with the Yamaha 5100 was great. I’m only setup with 5.1 in my theater and 3.2 in my living room and 2.1 in my bedroom so can’t really verify that. :) Hoping to upgrade my theater to 5.1.4 next year.

Will try dsu thing over the weekend. Maybe this is the bit i missed. I dont even expect exact instruments recognission and placement but some sort of approximate picture over 5.1.

My favorite is realtek's "public bathroom" dsp. :D
