We use to have something similar in the mast bedroom with a flat screen and sound bar mounted to the wall above it. It was always fine, but i wouldnt do it with expensive gear.

The problem came when my wife lit a candle on it only inches from the tv which melted the plastic lol. We still have that tv, scar and all!

I can understand your reluctance to sign in (or have an account with) Facebook or Google, but there is no way to "data farm" by simply posessing your eMail address. Although Massdrop will almost certainly track your activity on their site while logged in, so could any website, including this one. Just don't login unless you need to and logout as soon as you are done, same good practice as for any website.

As inadviseable as this product is, many Home Theater installations involve a flat screen placed above a fireplace. From that we can assume many people would see this product as something they would buy. Give the people (or their wives) what they want, the mantra of consumer product design & manufacturing. Seen in that light, it probably sells.
