New Basement, New Build, need some advice

Lots of good advice so far. Definitely would do 2 subs in that space. They will see all of the available airspace so 2 should be good for around 6db extra and help smooth it out as mentioned. Also agree with keeping the surrounds more to the sides than rear will be better, and 7.2.4 might still be possible.
When we built our house, I needed a place for my right surround. What we came up with was a pillar about 14x14 to mount on, and also hold the light switch for various areas of the space. My wife hates it but I was not going to build a house and not have a spot for one stupid speaker lol. It’s not THE most elegant solution but it works.
Anyways, I just wanted to throw it out there that maybe a small(???) architectural detail might solve one of your issues. Maybe not, just putting stuff out there. Here is a couple shots for reference. The old room had a 35lb jbl speaker mounted on the pillar. We redid the room and I used in walls for side surrounds(part of my Atmos compromise lol). So now the room has 7.3.4 installed. Still waiting on avr...

I think the column is fine!

Best option may be stand mounted surrounds, which is what I did. Or some book shelf speakers that can be surface mounted on the ceiling.

Triad makes inwalls with backboxes...I've heard good things about them.

My Noble Fidelity in ceiling do not have back boxes, but they are some of the best sounding in ceiling speakers I've heard...they're on the upper end of price, but still affordable.
I'm going to see if my contractor has any ideas how we can get creative in that space. The layout of kitchen/bath isn't finalized yet so he may have some ideas what we can do. I will look into those speaker options!

We do have a post to the left there in the kitchen area but I'm really trying to stay away from ugly speakers hanging around the room. I know I'm probably compromising some sound quality but aesthetics are important to me...and my wife of course!
Could you put a speaker IN the post? That’s what I ended up doing. Fwiw, you can get a good experience with in walls so don’t worry there.

I don't see why not. I guess it depends on speaker size and how big the post would have to be boxed out. That post is not in a good place for what we're trying to fit at that end of the room so we probably want to keep it as small as possible. Food for thought though.

doesnt have to be huge.
Edit: But you’ll probably want to consider scale.

The WAF is almost always in play so I certainly understand...my HT space is sort of "my" space if you will...the house is a 1.5 story. I was "allotted" an upstairs loft space with some funky angles...initially I was not into it because the stairs (I'm getting old), but I love it!

She has mostly stayed out of the way, but I spent a lot of time on my wiring to make sure it would meet the WAF when she does come up.

I can certainly appreciate this too. For all of my chest pounding, I do value my wife’s options, and no matter how many speakers and things are in the room, I like to keep an eye on taste as well.

My gf was a little surprised when I got two VTF2 instead of the one VTF15 but it’s worth it. :)

I like the column idea. Looks nice and serves as functional.

Thx. I think it works pretty well. I keep trying to embellish it with subtle things, like a painting or whatever, but she’s just like, nope I don’t want anymore attention drawn to it lol. Whatever... I just laugh.

Should have told her it was required to hold the roof up. "Sorry dear, contractor says its a must."

Totally worth it! One reason I like the cylinders is the form factor is small. Especially with my tallish ceilings, I don’t even notice them. I think I could hide a pair of “shoes” in here too though. They are on my radar with the fv’s. I’ve got some plans for a dual 18” on/in wall architectural thing too. I could frame up the spaces next to my fireplace at the back of the room with some bada$$ LLT’s. That might give my concrete a run for its money!

My wife is the primary reason I have a surround sound system, she's the movie buff. So to make the space inviting for her, I spent extra time fishing wires behind walls for the side surrounds, as well as the near field sub...you don't see any wires anywhere....with her OCD issues that would've been a problem for sure.

FWIW, the inwall surrounds in your space do look cleaner.

I was looking at those SVS cylinder subs, but my 3 cats would think they are scratching posts. LOL :)

I have those subs and they are my wifes favorite part of the theater. I love the way they sound, she loves the way they look. Must be some kind of female hormone thing lol.

You’re a good man.
I agree. The 35lb jbls were not as elegant but for a looooong time, I didn’t care. They image sooo good, and sound amazing. I’d still have them but it was part of the deal. The room did benefit visually though.

Possibly. I have had a few cats here and not even ONE looked at them funny so... I think they’re too big to appeal that way, but every cat is different I guess.
