I’m looking for a sub for a 2.1 channel system that will be basically be all music. This is going in a large basement room that is 21’ x 30’ x 7.5’. There is major WAF to be taken into consideration so I can’t buy a massive sub. I was considering the HSU ULS-15 or the VTF MK3, both of which are priced well but not sure they are powerful enough for that room. The room has vinyl plank flooring with a couple of area rugs but this is basically a basement bar with a pool table and I’m creating a music station in one end of the room. I’m pairing them with a pair of Dynaudio Excite 14 bookshelves and ideally would love to stay under $1k.

Thanks

I'm not sure you can get a more powerful sub for under $1k than the ones you specified. As for whether that will be enough for that room, one factor in that is how loud you listen. If you are going to listen at really loud levels, one might not be enough. Of course, you can always just add another later.

I suggest looking used if thats your budget. A used Velodyne DD10 or DD12 would work wonders. Even an older HGS Velodyne 10 or 12 inch model would sound amazing.
Another used company to look for is REL. You want music you got it here. Their sub bass systems are incredible and find a way to get lost in the room. Mating speakers with them is a simple pleasure us music lovers so much enjoy. I have setup so many REL subwoofers in my lifetime with huge success. The Dynaudio Excite models demand a high quality sub and will greatly benefit from a REL Strata III or even a Storm III which is what I think you should try to find.

Not a fan of buying used subs, but from the right owner maybe. Stay clear of the HGS series as amp failure was very high. I had a total of 3 replaced on 2 subs.

If the OP is handy and willing to invest more time in eq and setup, he can build 22" cubes with a dayton ultimax 18 that will play pretty loud.

If the ones mentioned work for his spouse, do two of them.

I also prefer new as I like being first LOL. But with the quality of the speakers he owns and the size of the room not to mention the need to be musical which many subs are not which if you ever have been around the block with subwoofers, this can be a frustrating topic. I think a lot of musical woofer can be had IF he finds a good condition REL or Velodyne. Even a JL Audio would make for a killer musical sub used for around a G note used.
There are not many musical room filling single subwoofers made today in that price range that I have heard that I would recommend.
I didn't know about the issue with the HGS amp . I have installed many and some of them are still in service today after all these years and many upgrades around the HGS model. But like many subwoofer amps, failure is higher then they should I have seen with many subwoofers.

The ULS15 looks good. I am considering that one for my living room because of WAF. Otherwise I love ported subs.
