I am moving my YAMAHA RN-301amp to my computer, and running an optical cable from the computer to the amp. I am not going with an external DAC, since the bookshelf speakers I will pair with it will be under $400.00 Canadian. (I got some good advice on this forum, letting me know that the entry level DAC won't be much of a difference with entry level speakers). My main 2 channel room will get an upgrade. (YAMAHA A-S801 amplifier), with either Wharfedale Diamond 250's, or Focal Chorus 726's. Does anyone suggest an external DAC? Or, is the YAMAHA DAC adequate? I mainly listen to streaming from my ROKU, (DEEZER, SIRIUS/XM), with the T.V. as the interface. Again, suggestions, advice, much appreciated.

The A-S801 has a better DAC chip for the asynchronous USB input, and a lower end one for the optical/coax inputs. Regardless, for sources like Roku, it won't make a difference even in theory. In practice, few people can hear the difference between DACs especially just between the chips, once you get past the really low end stuff. As I mentioned in your other thread, even integrated amps such as that Yamaha, is not likely going to sound better in a blind test than a mid range AVR that are often available at incredibly cheap when the new models are out.

I'd skip the dac and put the money towards the next model up in the speaker line.

Not sure of the import tax, but at $399 this avr is hard to beat for a 2ch system.
